USB wireless and dsl modem

Postby Turkeyscore.com on Thu Sep 04, 2003 8:26 pm

I have SBC yahoo dsl and the modem has built in wireless. It is plugged to my wired linksys router ($3.99 at goodwill 8) ) and that sends the dsl to my 1 Ghz system. My parents have a 200 mhz windows 98 system across the house that has a 802.11b USB device. I tried networking the two but the 200 mhz doesnt detect the modem. They are less than 50 feet apart. Do I need any more equipment? the modem is a 2Wire 1000SW.

and another thing, is it a modem or is it called something else? it does the job of a modem but i dont know if it is called a modem when it is dsl? (Not that it matters)

DSL modem is correct. The 200MHz computer does not recognize a direct wireless feed from the modem (not from the router)? If that's the case, and your 1GHz machine has a strong feed to the wireless modem, then one of two things are wrong:

1. Something else is interfering with the signal between your wireless modem and the 200MHz PC.

2. The 200MHz PC and wireless modem are incompatible.

Are you positive the modem is 802.11b? Is the 802.11b USB device working properly? Is the device even compatible with the PC? If the device is USB 2.0 and the computer only supports 1.1 then that may be the issue.
No, I like women.

I have encrypting turned off for both, and both are set to the same channel (2412 mhz or something like that).
it looks kinda like this

1 Ghz machine CAT5>Router
Modem Cat5>Router
And what I want to do is
200 Mhz machine 802.11b>Router

Im going to see if i can use the 802.11 Usb adapter with my 1ghz. (and get it to communicate with the modem)
