Verbatim DVD-RW 4X Country of Origin in US

Postby Jim on Thu Nov 17, 2005 10:59 pm

I was at Microcenter today and saw a single jewel case of Verbatim 4X DVD-RW for sale for $1.99. I picked it up. It was made in Taiwan with the MCC01RW4X media code which was strange. I was expecting Made in Singapore like the reports on videohelp.com for the Verbatim DataLifePlus discs with this media code. The raw dump of the media code was slightly different from the Singapore discs. I wonder if I got DVD-RW media produced by ?CMC? for Verbatim with Verbatim's media ID?

Here is what I bought: http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0201390

Here is the Made in Singapore Media ID:

00 6A 00 00 01 02 D6 FD 9E D8 31 00 02 00 00 00 .j........1.....
00 00 00 00 03 4D 43 43 20 30 31 00 04 52 57 34 .....MCC 01..RW4
58 20 20 00 05 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 06 15 0C 05 X .............

Here is the Made in Taiwan Media ID I received:
00000000 00 42 00 00 01 02 D6 FD 9E D8 31 00 02 00 00 00 .B........1.....
00000010 00 00 00 00 03 4D 43 43 20 30 31 00 04 52 57 34 .....MCC 01..RW4
00000020 58 20 20 00 05 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 06 15 0C 05 X .............

I added a new entry for this disc over at videohelp.com. I'll keep looking for some 4X DVD-RW media Made in Singapore. I wonder where the JVC0VictorD7 4X DVD-RW is made?

I would guess that your disc was made by CMC for Mitsubishi, as much of the Mitsubishi Made in Taiwan media is made by CMC. I wish to make one interesting comment: I bought the same single pack Verbatim 4X DVD-RW disc from Microcenter Fairfax, VA for $1.99 in late February of this year and it was Made in Singapore (which of course means that it was made by Mitsubishi, not outsourced). The back of the jewel case says, "Verbatim Corporation, 2004, A Subsidiary of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation." Apparently Mitsubishi has switched manufacturing of these discs to the CMC (or another Taiwanese maker), and that's why you got made in Taiwan. Out last thing: my Verbatim 4X DVD-RW disc says 4X above the "SPEED/VITESSE" labeling on the front of the jewel case. The disc pictured on Microcenter.com that you linked to above says 2X-4X on the labeling. I'm sure that's just a stupid change in the labeling.

Verbatim/MKM has already transferred all their DVD media manufacturing to Taiwan using either the CMC Magnetics and Prodisc's facilities, except for the more demanding DVD-/+R DL media. Even in the Japanese market, the bulk of MKM (formerly MCC) media are made in Taiwan.

The made in Singapore discs other than the DL media are definitely from old inventory. Also the newer Verbatim packages have dropped DataLifePlus label, at least in the US market.

The JVC branded DVD-RW media are the only made in Japan DVD-RW media I know of. I've only seen the JVC 2X DVD-RW media sold in Fry's Electronics stores so far, but no 4X.

My jewel case says 4X as well, as does the disc itself on the hub, but the back shows Copyright Verbatim Corporation, 2005. I'm always checking store shelves when I go into retail stores now. If I find a Verbatim Singapore or a JVC Japan disc I will buy it for testing/use.
