That Sony drive is made by Lite-On, so your basically getting the same drive. I would get which ever one you can find cheaper. I would lean more on the Lite-On because you can upgrade the firmware from Lite-On's web-site, while the Sony drive requires firmware from Sony. Also, the Lite-On comes with Nero, while Sony does not.

I agree with BuddhaTB. One thing though--the Sony CAN be flashed with Lite-On firmware, using MTKFlash.

Yes, but only if one is willing and able to extract the binary data from the exe files on the LiteOn web site (or get someone else to do it for them, e.g. download from a third-party web site) and doesn't mind giving up the ability to use the bundled burning software that comes with the Sony drive.

It is probably too big a job for the average user.

I agree with Cfitz, especially when there are so many great deals on re-badged 48x Liteons out there. The Cendynes and Buslinks are both re-badged Liteons with original firmwares and Nero bundled right in there. Look hard and they can be had for around $30 or less after MIR's.

They are great, whenever I get a chance to crank 'em that is! Actually, they sound good at all volumes but they excel because they don't start getting all muddled when the volume cranks like most wimpy computer speakers do. I definitely think that they were worth every penny that I paid for them.

The Cendyne and BUSlink drives are OEM Lite-On drives straight out of the box. These drives even have the Lite-On label on the back of the drive itself. Your basically buying a Lite-On drive, but with a Cendyne or BUSlink manual and a different box on the outside.

yeah, no matter what rebadged lite-on you buy, you can't go wrong, also you might want to take a look at the manufacture warranty, how long it is

Yeah, I got them for $139 at BB about a month or two ago. I can't complain. I just might have to get me a part-time job at one of the tech places soon though, I need an employee discount so bad.

Not familiar enough with either to make a call. I'm still playing with my NetMD player! I would definitely look for the fastest interface though. You won't really enjoy filling something like that up no matter what but at least at USB 2.0 or Firewire speeds it won't take you half a day.

I read some good reviews on it when I was looking at some MP3 players for a friend. However I don't know enough about the Archos to say for sure. I guess it really depends on which user interface you like and also the shape/design for the player. Another thing is that the Nomad has a 16MB buffer while the Archos only has a 2MB buffer. Go with the one that feels right for you.
