Hyperthreading allows the CPU to execute multiple threads of code simultaneously. Thus, the CPU can do two things at once. In very rough terms, it is like adding another CPU to your system without actually plugging in another chip - sort of a poor man's multiprocessor system. Intel claims speed increases of up to 25-30%. Note, however, that this increase in speed only applies when you are running multiple applications at once or are running applications that have been designed to take advantage of hyperthreading.

Hyperthreading differs from dual processors in that the same processor substructure can't be used for different applications as with dual CPU's.

However, it can use separate substructures such as the floating point unit and the integer unit simultaneously with separate applications.

Only Windows 2000 and Windows XP are able to take advantage of Hyperthreading technology. The motherboard must also support it. Al Pentium 4s have the capability to Hyperthread, its just that the only chip that uses the technology is the latest 3.06GHz Pentium 4.

The Pentium 5 won't be out until 2005. Its code name is Nehalem. It will be on a .09 manufacturing process.

it basically handles 2 threads at once, all current processors, besides the xeon pentium, are only single threaded handling processers

Among the server-oriented processors available for under $300, Xeon P4 are the only ones capable of processing multiple threads at once. Among the desktop processors, Prescotts and Northwoods are the first. Some of the newer generations of Northwood Pentium 4 processors will also have Hyper-Threading technology enabled according to the latest roadmaps. And SMT is not Intel's monopoly.
