Which DVD Burner?

Postby Claudio on Tue Jul 08, 2003 12:39 pm

I have to choose between NEC ND13000, Iomega or Pioneer, all DVD+/-RW, what is better? Any suggestion?

Thanks, Claudio.

I'd suggest you search the DVD forum, you aren't the first person that has posted this topic.

Also www.google.com and some initiative are your friend.

I recommend the TDK IndiDVD 440N for obvious reasons :)

yup, well, although not among your choices, TDK 440N is a good choice. Sleek looking drive, and great burning speeds as well. nice packaging, and i think TDK support is nice. Price is reasonable. The TDK 440N by the way is based on the ND-1300A drive of NEC, which is among your choices. I would go for the TDK 440N, to get a warranty on my drive, and to get that sleek look of the drive and getting the NEC-ND1300A performance at the same time, unless of course price is a big issue for you.

I still can't get over the fact why a lot of people would rather go for a rebadged rather than the original. NM, it's cheaper.

If you know the TDK DVD writer is really a NEC ND-1300A, why not just get the real thing?

Anyway, I'd go for either a NEC ND-1300A or Optorite DD0203. Some people don't like the latter model because they can't get HD-Burn to work, and thinks the tray and eject button is cheap... Been using it for a month, and I still can't find the flaws mentioned.

I also agree on the Optorite DVD writer. The other DVD writers don't support HD-Burn, AFAIK, so why not save some $$$ and buy the Optorite? It burns DVD's just fine.

Well, getting the original NEC ND-1300 is definitely cheaper than the TDK version. But if you buy NEC, you will not get any tech support from NEC or RMA service with them. Your only source of help is either thru. your retailer or on forums like here. Furthermore, TDK will post new official firmware on their page but NEC doesn't.

Depends on what sort of service you find most useful. New users may like the nice warm feeling official support gives you but user support is inherently more useful IMHO.

As for which drive to choose, well it all depends on what sort of media you'll be burning. If it's mainly +R/W media, go for the NEC or one of the rebadged versions (like the TDK). If you want to burn lots of cheap -R media though, avoid like the plague -- the NEC is -R-picky. In this instance, buy the Pioneer.

Based on the experiences of many acquaintences the Pioneer drives make very good workhorses, burning thousands of discs without fault. To be perfectly honest, I trust the Pioneer drives more than any other at present. Most cheaper -R media is made specifically to work with the Pioneer writer. And when I can get 4x -R media for around $0.70 as opposed to $2.00 for 4x +R I know which I'd choose!!!

Regarding NEC's tech support, I do believe NEC does provide some support for people who are in Europe (at least in Germany) as I were reading some comments from other forums.

Yeah, because NEC sells their drives directly to the retail market over there. In other parts of the world, NEC sells their drives only to OEM's.

The NEC 1300A is a very nice drive, I have a friend with one and I have used it pretty extensively (~50 burns) with no problems whatsoever.

I would really have to recommend the Optorite DD0203 though. The only fault of this drive is its incompatibilty with some media (dvd and cd hd-burn).
Optorite has made great steps reducing the incompatibilties through firmware releases though, and I'm sure it'll only get better in the future.

Best of luck,
