Which firmware for Lite-On 811S/851S OEM drive?

Postby SkaarjMaster on Thu Feb 26, 2004 4:46 pm

Just got this burner, so which firmware should I use. I noticed the drive says 851S on it and the 851S firmware is newer, so is this the firmware I should use? Thanks.

I'm guessing since I bought this OEM version and it actually says 851S on the device, then I should use the 851S drivers. I'm also guessing that the retail 811S would require the 811S drivers. I'm just trying to use the best drivers for my device. Anyone know about this at all?

I bought the external 851 and the internal and external use the same FW, therefore, you should use the firmware for 851. The one that came with mine was DR8GS08 and if I'm not mistaken the new one is the DR8GS0C. I downloaded the new one but I have not installed it. I hope this helps.

SkaarjMaster,
Check here, www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm, to get your FW for yout Litey and also look at the Utility for BookType settings. It allows you to change the settings on your DVD+Rs and DVD+RWs to DVD-ROM giving you the ability to play them on older DVD Players. I just used it and it worked for me. I burned a copy of one my DVDs using DVDXCOPY Platinum, (I know for some, this is not a good program, but it has worked for me), and played it on my Toshiba DVD Player (SD-3950) which only plays DVD-ROMs and DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs and it played great. So, if you like give it a try. Good luck.

How can I tell which firmware my drive has? I just installed my Lite-On 811S.

I downloaded the HS0P firmware from the Lite-On site. Just not sure if I should try to update it.

Is this firmware better that the previous version?

Thanks

One way would be to use Nero Info Tool and it will give you the version of your current firmware. As far as updating to the new one, well, I have two LiteOns and I usually make a backupcopy of the current then flash it with the new. I just recently updated my LDW-851 with the newest one and its working great. Good Luck.

The following is directly from LiteOns site.

Check out the above site.

This version firmware allows users to modify the BookType setting of a DVD recordable media, thus enhancing the media read compatibility in older DVD playback devices. How do you back up the the firmware before you update?

I am planning to update to the new firmware, I'm just a little worried that it might cause problems. I am very inexperienced with this whole thing.

tdbmi73,
I was wrong in what I said to you. I had a backup copy from when I initially downloaded it from the LiteOn site. Once you update to new FW you cannot go back to the old one. At least, I don't know how. I did call LiteOn Tech Support and was given the info I'm giving you now. So, if you flash the new the old one is gone. And make a copy of this current one and save it some where cause if you have any problems, you flash the drive again with that one. If you need contact Tech Support at 1-888-4-LITEON. I'm new to all this too. I hope the info helps. Good luck.

My Lite-On 811S drive is Pacific Digital rebadge. Is there any problem with updating hte firmware on these drives with the update from the Lite-On site? I assume that it will be OK since my system ID's it as a Lite-On 811S. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't something different about the Pacific Digital drives before I attempt the update.

Thanks

There I don't know, but I guess if your system picks it up as a Litey 811S, then if you flash it with the FW for the 811S it should be OK. But like I said, I'm not 100% sure. Maybe someone else with more experience can answer this question.

Another thing you might want to check is that if the current FW on your Pacific Digital is the same for the Litey 811S ( prior Fw) then upgrading to the new FW should not be a problem. Good Luck.

I also have the Pacific digital rebadged Lite-On. I flashed the firmware using Lite-on's latest and had no problem. The Pacific Digital web site didn't have anything on the drive.

Thanks for the info.

It does currently have the Lite-On firmware, so I guess it should be OK. I will probably give it a shot this weekend.

I updated to the latest firmware and everything seems to be working just fine. I even tried out the Booktype utility which seemed to work fine.

My set-top DVD player will only play back DVD-R so I burned a DVD+R and changed the book type to DVD-ROM. My set-top plays it perfectly.

Now I have to decide if I want to buy DVD-R media or DVD+R and change the booktype. Any comments on which would be the better way to go?

tdbmi73, I too have a DVD player that plays DVD-R and DVD-RW, and I too have thought the same, which one do I buy? I'll stick with the DVD+R for now, since I can change the booktype (DVD-ROM), because they will play on my Toshiba -R/-RW and on my older DVD player. I guess now you have an option. Good Luck.

ruderacer, am I correct in assuming that the compatibility of a DVD+R with the book type changed to DVD-ROM would be more compatible with other players than a DVD-R? The DVD-ROM book type should play an anything, right?

If so, if I wanted to burn a DVD that I could give to someone and know for sure that it would play on their player, it would be better to use DVD+R and change the book type.

Also, the Lite-On 811S burns +R at 8X and -R at only 4X.

Please let me know if my assumptions are correct.

Thanks.

I would say this is correct, at least in my opinion. That's what I'm planning on doing. Since my 851 burns at 8X also in +R, then I going to keep on using the +Rs. Like I said before, I made a copy of a movie using the +R, then changing it to DVD-ROM, and it played without any problems in my Toshiba that only plays DVD-ROMs, DVD-Rs, and DVD-RWs. Give it a try, the plus is burning at 8X and compatibility. Good Luck.
