who makes the "Digital Research 48/16/48" cdrw??

a friend of mine just purchased this drive, and I wanted to find out who makes it. If someone knows, please tell, and also do you think this drive is any good??

Just ask your friend to tell you what the drive shows up as under nero or what model number is found on the drive label. Another way to tell is to see what kind of buffer underrun protection it uses. If it's a Lite-On drive, then it'll use SmartBurn. I don't think this drive is a Lite-On, as they never released a 48x16x48 drive. It's probably a Benq (Acer) or Optorite, but I could be wrong. Just ask your friend for the above info and you'll find out what drive he has.

It is most likely a BenQ drive.

but my friend hasnt opened the box yet, soon though. Also, it doesnt mention on the box what kind of buffer underrun it uses. So lets just say that this drive is either a Benq, Acer , or Optorite, should I tell my friend to return it?? or keep it??

I would say return it, but it depends on the stores return policy and how much he got it for. But Lite-On is a far better product than Benq and Optorite.
