Lite-On Europe announced this week, that it will begin shipping its new 22x DVD writers in October. Along with SecurDisc, the drives will support a new feature called SmartErase. Similar to Plextor's PlexEraser technology, SmartErase destroys the data on CD-R and DVD±R media without physically damaging the disc.
SmartErase is a patented function for DVD+/-R (DL) and CD-R discs, which overwrites existing data with random and meaningless characters so the disc can no longer be read by any drive.

This process provides assurance that any confidential data is no longer able to be accessed by anyone and is guarantees a more thorough approach to simply breaking the disc or ‘shredding’ data. SmartErase is an ideal solution for companies or individuals that need to delete confidential data stored on a write-once disc. Instead of physically destroying the disc, you can now simply overwrite the data and make the disc unreadable. After a full erase the data cannot be recovered and this method is friendlier to the environment then physically destroying disc, which releases chemicals to the environment.
Lite-On will be releasing four new models with the SmartErase function. Along with the iHAP322 (PATA) and iHAS322 (SATA), the company will offer two LightScribed equipped drives, the iHAP422 (PATA) and iHAS422 (SATA). More information about these drives can be found here.
