Pioneer DVR-107D vs. NEC ND-2500A, Some Preliminary Tests

Postby Telstar on Mon Jan 05, 2004 5:12 pm

Here are some preliminary Nero CD-DVD test results for the Pioneer DVR-107D and NEC ND-2500A conducted by a Taiwanese website, they are quite self-explanatory even without any translation. The media used in the tests were Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R (TYG02), Mitsubishi Chemical 52X CD-R and Mitsubishi Chemical 24X CD-RW discs.

Note that the Pioneer 107D also reads DVD-RAM discs at 2X, this will come in handy for people who also own standalone DVD-RAM recorders.

That A07 looks pretty good...
That 2500 doesn't look too hot though, a lot of errors when it comes to reading back disks.

Pioneer has indicated that it will start selling the A07/107D after the 8X DVD-R standard is approved by the DVD Forum, and we may not see the new model on the market until the end of the month.

On a side note, there was a rumor that even the CMC Magnetics made 4X DVD-R discs were certified for 8X burning on the A07/107D. Guess we'll find out soon.

Those curves look really unstable in the CD-DVD Speed tests. My LiteON LTR-32123S CD-Recorder produces "straight" charts every time...

Why most people are wondering while CMC might be that good supported.

Keep in mind the following: CMC DVD disc's are most times of quite decent quality. Infact CMC recording part is above average and better as most other disc's.(Dye is much more stable as Ritek dvd-r for instance and the reflectivity is better as Ricoh dvd+R)
Main problem is the support by drive manufacturers because of CMC 's reputation in the past. Because of this the end quality can still be terrible.
The same media of the batch of 4x DVD+R media that performed good on my Pioneer a06 performed terrible on a Lite On 811S and okay (not something I would use. But okay for most people) on a Plextor 708.

Secondary problem is that the inner ring is sometimes rough and has suspension bubbles in it. But then again so have some cheaper Riteks.
This suspension bubbles could cause disc's easier to break at high speed.
If you bought it as branded media from a well known brand (Verbatim/Philips) then I would ask for replacement media.

All I know is:

I have the ND-2500A here, and the writing quality on DVD discs is very good :)

Overall its writing quality is better than any of the other drives I have...including pioneer DVR-106 and plextor PX-708A.

i too have owned:

Sony DRU-510A
Pioneer 106
Plextor 708a

so far i really like the NEC the best, the drive quality is tiny bit better than the Plextor 708a

When speaking about ND-2500A build quality:

I dislike that it vibrates a bit when spinning at top speed - makes an annoying sound.

mine doesn't vibrate at all?

are you ripping that it makes vibrations, cause i have never ripped with mine

could also be the way mines mounted, mines in a Xaser 3 Silver Case, on rails

very tight rails to the drive

If you talk about the burn curves take the following into account
Yeah but then again your CD-recorder doesn't monitor and change the writing strategy that drastically as modern OPC in DVD writers do.
Pioneer seems to use a new sort of OPC which looks to be a even more extreme fine tuning mechanism as the philips and nexperia oem chipset based burners have.

the NEC 2500 does not support book type setting

it may say that in nero before you burn, but after you burn, check em out in dvdinfopro, still says dvd-r and dvd+r

that threw me off at first too

any chance it will support book type setting in the future with like the other nec burners and how do movie back ups play on x-box?.also is their any other 4x -r discs that go at 8x other than mitsubishi and Taiyo Yuden and other 4x +r discs that go at 8x other than ricoh . hopefully get one in a few weeks when cc clears unless the pioneer 107 comes out at a better price.

thanks for any input

That's because the XBox is fully capable of DVD movie playback, however when you buy the DVD playback kit, you are paying for the rights to officially playback the DVD format on the XBox. I think your modchip is disabling the built in restrictions on it, which the kit usually handles.
