03 April 2012

HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and now a Western Digital company) today introduced the world’s first 4TB enterprise-class hard drive family, the Ultrastar 7K4000. Ushering in a new generation of 512e Advanced Format drives, the Ultrastar 7K4000 family provides space-efficient, high-performance, low-power storage for traditional enterprises as well as for the explosive big data and cloud/Internet markets where storage density, watt-per-gigabyte and cost-per-GB are critical parameters. Hungry for massive storage, cloud and Internet businesses are redefining the datacenter by designing new types of servers and storage architectures to help manage explosive petabyte (PB) growth. Critical to their datacenter infrastructure is the ability to scale and efficiently manage performance, power and storage space to help reduce total cost of ownership (TCO).

The new Ultrastar 7K4000 family addresses enterprise datacenter needs by offering high reliability and a TCO value proposition like no other. As the only 4TB 7,200 RPM enterprise-class drive in the industry, and one with a 2.0 million hours mean time between failure¹ (MTBF) specification, the Ultrastar family is the ultimate solution for 24x7 enterprise applications such as big data, cloud computing, data warehousing, video-on-demand, disk-to-disk backup, and massive scale-out storage implementations.

02 April 2012

LSI Corporation today introduced the Nytro portfolio, a comprehensive family of solutions that combines PCIe flash technology with intelligent caching and management software to achieve accelerated application performance in datacenters and cloud environments.

The amount of data being stored and accessed worldwide is growing at an exponential rate, outpacing the ability of traditional storage architectures to keep up. This creates bottlenecks, throttling application performance and making it harder for companies to extract the full value from data. Nytro solutions allow datacenters to contend with massive data growth and speed the ability of databases and other applications to access data and provide real-time analytics and reporting.

"The integration of flash technology in enterprise system architectures is one of the most significant changes in recent computing history based on its ability to close the gap between compute and storage performance," said Gary Smerdon, senior vice president and general manager, Accelerated Solutions Division, LSI. "From cloud providers in mega datacenters to traditional enterprise and small-to-medium businesses, the Nytro portfolio brings the value of flash to the masses by offering customers the flexibility to choose the right solution to meet their specific application and budget requirements."

Featuring ultra-fast sequential read and write transfer speeds of 104 MB/s and 93 MB/s respectively, the PSD320 dramatically improves performance of older equipment without the high cost of replacing the entire machine. The PSD320 SSD fully supports PATA, Ultra DMA modes 0-6, PIO modes 0-4, and multi-word DMA modes 0-2, to offer installation flexibility for all types of legacy equipment built around the 2.5" PATA storage device standard. Although the 2.5" form factor is commonly associated with notebook storage, the PSD320 is suitable for use in POS machines, factory automation computers, medical equipment, and engineering machines.
