I heard on another hot deals forum that there were doubts about the two $100 rebates being 'stackable' so to speak, since they both go to the exact same address...

I haven't been back there for an update since yesterday though.

Most likely, only one of the two $100 rebates will be honored. The jury is still out, though ...

Yes, I am still somewhat worried about that. For that reason, I haven't ordered one yet. I'm thinking that I may call Dell and see what they think (and if they will honor the rebate even if Western Digital doesn't).

Even if they only honor one, that's still a great price for a 200gb drive.

The second rebate was removed from the product page hours ago.

I heard Dell might be cancelling orders...

For $120 after $100 rebate I'll pass:
I have seen better deals.
I bought a 120 GB 7200 RPM WD HD at CC for $10 + $8 tax AR, although that was a special case.
A year ago when prices on the whole were higher tha now, I bought an 80 GB Maxtor 7200 RPM HD for $18 + $10 tax at Staples, after two rebates, PM and coupon).
There were other nice deals, but I didn't need more HDs.

I know this deal is easier, but...

Has anybody here ever purchased an item online, and then mailed out a rebate for that item using a different name & address as is on the online receipt?

I have heard of someone who got rejected at TCA for doing so.

CompUSA in-store receipts list the name on the credit card used.

Exactly pay in cash, if you are buying it as a favor for a friend or family member.

I originally had a story related to that, but I edited my post, and left only the comment, so it probably didn't make much sense anymore. :)

I did a Fuji/CompUSSR rebate recently for a friend, and I noticed that my name was on the receipt. I'm still waiting to see how "myrewards.info" deals with that ...

It appears Dell has decided to honor both $100 rebates!

:D :D :D :D :D

Dear Valued Customer,

After further consideration, we have determined that the $200 in rebates will be honored on eligible purchases of 200 GB Western Digital hard drives ordered between September 25, 2003 and September 27, 2003. Please disregard our prior communication on this issue. We value you as a customer and will keep your order in process at the original online purchase price.

I would have bet my hat that they wouldn't honor it, especially
since MANY people on one of the Hot Deals forums bought it knowing there was a doubt about the rebates, but were going to fight it.

Good job to all those who got in and took a risk!!
Based on the huge number of orders placed and the fact that it is an extra $100 rebate per order, this is probably costing Dell a ton of money!

I have seen companies honor mistakes before, but with this one I was shocked; especially since many people knew deep down it was a screwup.
and that they would probably have to fight.

Dell has impressed me once again! i didn't get in on the HD deal, but I am impressed how they are handling it, since they were originally giving people the option to cancel orders, and honroing the 2nd rebate for the few orders that shipped before the mistake was caught or handled.

I wonder if they are honoring all of the 200 GB HD orders, or only those placed by a certain time, since they removed the mention of the second rebate from the product description within about 15 1/2 (I believe) hours of the deal first appearing.

At least I got a Circuit City 120 GB Western Digital 7200 RPM HD for just $10 + tax after rebates back in April :)
They had mistakenly advertised an extra rebate, which they gave as an instant discount to those who ordered by a certain time...
It was different from the Dell deal, in that CC not only posted the price
as being $10 AR, but they posted three rebates for THREE DIFFERENT amounts, so they were different offers, unlike the Dell $100 overlapping rebate screwup.
Nobody could know it was a mistake.

With Dell most rebate veterans knew it was a mistake, even if some of them didn't admit it.

I agree that the Dell deal probably was a mistake, but the fascinating thing is that the two rebates were compatible. These kinds of rebates ALWAYS require the original UPC. The only kind of rebate that allows a copy is the second rebate on a 2-rebate deal. And the second rebate on this Dell deal did not require the UPC - just the capacity label! So, it sure seemed like it was set up as a 2 rebate deal.

Part of me does feel a little bit guilty about this deal. Knowing that Dell is a fabulously profitable company puts that guilt to rest, though. :P

You don't have to feel too guilty :)
Dell had the option to do what they initially said they would do in their first official response, which was to automatically cancel the orders, unless people wanted it knowing that one of the rebates wouldn't be honred.
They then reviewed their position and decided to honor both rebates, no doubt so as to maintain a good image and in the hopes of repeat business.

I have bought several items from Dell, and have been satisfied, especially with the prices thanks to coupons.
