I tend to follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" maxim, but here is what I did (remember, I am using Windows 2000, so details might vary somewhate):

1. open device manager

2. select IDE controller, then right-click and select properties
select the driver tab, and press update driver

3. go through the wizard and pick the Microsoft driver (the driver provider will be listed as Microsoft rather than VIA. On my 2000 machine I am using version 5.0.2195.5438) If the wizard doesn't pick it for you, go back and check "display a list of the known drivers..." rather than "search for a suitable driver"

4. you may need the Windows installation disc

5. reboot as prompted

One difference is that the bezel is mounted differently on the 166S than all other drives.

DVD RPC

Postby techsupp101 on Fri Dec 20, 2002 7:30 am

How can I change the RPC on LiteOn DVD LTD166S?
Also, where can I get the updated firmware?

All you need can be found at Dimitri's super site for LiteOn DVD firmware:

http://digi.web1000.com or http://digitri.tk or http://kickme.to/digitri

Thanks cfitz. One more question, which of the two is the latest firmware for LiteOn DVD LTD166S DS0B or DS0F? I have the LTD 166S DSOB and I don't know if I should flash it with the DSOF firmware.

DS0F is the latest - they go in alphabetical order.

The official LiteOn site states that the DS0F firmware matches more media:

http://www.jlms.com.tw/download.htm

I ususally think of this phrase used in relation to CD-RW drives. These drives have built-in tables of burning parameters (laser power, etc.) that are used to optimize the burning quality for various brands of blank CD-R/RW media. I am presuming that the "match more media" phrase, when used in relation to a read-only DVD-ROM drive means that there are similar tables for optimizing the reading of various DVD (and CD) media. In this case maybe they are tuning the drive's ability to read some of the new higher speed recordable DVD media. Maybe dhc014 or dimitri could tell us more.

In any event, I haven't upgraded my DS0B 166S yet, primarly since I haven't noticed any problems with its read performance. Some people like to upgrade to the latest whenever it comes out. Others, like myself, follow the old maxim "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - particularly since there is always a (small) chance of something going wrong during a flash upgrade.

In deciding whether or not to upgrade, ask yourself which type of personality you have, and whether you are experiencing any problems with media compatibility that might be improved by the upgrade.

cfitz

I did it! I removed the RPC of the LiteON DVD 166S using RPCDE tool. I didn't even have to update the firmware. My DVD drive is now region free.

Thanks,

Actually, yes. The Region Counter is, in effect, removed...

I meant Ian's starting post... :D

I have just noticed that was also removed. I just came back to this thread since someone wanted to know what the differences between 165H and 166S are.

Maybe you have to wait for about 10 months.
