Are 8x8x24x8x Combo's Still Good?

I thought about saving up for a Laptop. I like those laptops that are desktop replacements. However I noticed they only come with a 8x8x24x8x combo drive. Some have 16x10x24x8x. Are these drives ok, since the 52x24x52x16x combos are out for regular desktops or will the laptops that are desktop replacements add the 52x24x52x16x combo's soon? I saw a good Compaq Presario laptop - P4 2.4, 512mb ram, 60gig hard drive, ATI Radeon 7000 64mb ...

Help LG CED-8120B

I have flashed my LG CED-8120B with wrong firmware and now it isn't working. It is not possible to flash the CD-RW drive again with the correct firmware version. Any idea what to do? Some people tell me to search for a chip on the drive's PCB to flash on a external programmer.
Thanks.

max. speed for reading (S)VCDs

My LiteOn LTR48246S is limited to 32x when reading (S)VCDs, even when scanning e.g. with CD-Speed quality check. MInfo shows this read speed too. According to Inertia, it is a common practice to limit the read speed, but I haven't seen any information for other drives.

Just out of curiousity- what is the maximum speed for reading (S)VCD's on your drive?

Best drive for EAC: LTR-48246S or LTD163

I wanted to confirm if the LiteOn burner LTR-48246S is better at DAE than the DVD LTD163. I've used EAC with the following settings:
Code: Select all
CD-RW:  secure
        caches: yes
        use C2: yes
        allow speed reduction

DVD:    secure
        caches: no
        use C2: no
        allow speed reduction

EAC says that the DVD is the "better" device for DAE- I suspect because it doesn't cache audio data- and I've used it in the past.

I've had some problems, though, ...

CD-R media: Must write speed match that of your drive?

I have spent several hours on the Internet looking for an answer to this question without success.

How critical is it to ensure that the advertiseed write speed of the CD-R media matches that of your drive? Is there some leeway either way?

For example, I have a batch of verbatim 700MB CD-Rs with x 48 indicated on the package. However my CDRW drive has a max write speed of x24. The retailer (a large ...

Warning: LiteON 52246S + Verbatim 10x CDRWs = DEATH!

Just a warning: the use of 10x Verbatim CD-RWs has been linked to the death of 3 or 4 LiteON 52246S burners, and is currently being looked into as a possible hardware fault.

Read about it here: http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/topic.asp? ... hichpage=1
