Plextor px-708A Buring really slow

Postby Turbo on Fri Feb 27, 2004 2:24 am

ive had my burner for awhile now, and at first i thought it would take it a long time to make a copy of a dvd, but when i got to asking my friends how long it takes them, they said it takes them about 30min to burn. So can anyone tell me how to figure out what is wrong with my plextor-px708a burner. OH it takes me an hour and 45min to burn one dvd, and my friends buners are only 4x.

System
amd 2800+
512 pc3200
geforce 5900 128mb
plextor-px708A
Msi K7NG2 (Nforce 2 chipset)

Thank for any help yall can give me.

I've seen postings regarding Nforce chipset problems. Go to this website:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php ... adid=88471
You can download the drivers for NForce chipset. Make sure your plextor is set in DMA mode and is connected as SECONDARY MASTER. :)

A 4x DVD should take about 15 minutes to burn, assuming it is just the burning process (not ripping or transcoding) and that your drive recognizes the media as 4x. Ripping and transcoding are dependent on your system speed, but also the speed of the DVD drive you're ripping with.

My LiteOn rips at 16x, which takes about 15min, and my system takes probably an hour to a little more to do the transcode (if I remember right, I'm going on memory) using DVDShrink. Add that to burning the CD at 4x, and it takes me an hour and 30 to an hour and 45 minutes. So when your friends say how long it takes them compared to you, are they talking the full process or just part of it, and what DVD drives are they ripping with?

Check the controller properties in the device manager and verify it is set for DMA. If in PIO mode, delete the controller and let the system identify it on reboot. It should go to DMA.

burning 8x media, or 4x writing at 8x, should take about 8 minutes. 4x media will take about 15 minutes.

If you're talking about the whole process of copying a DVD, it depends on a lot of factors, one of which is the final burning process. Check http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ for tutorials and links to various programs.

i had the same shit b4 with my gigabyte m.b. & plextor 708.
u should use the alternative nforce2 ide driver not the original one
& resolve the dma problem if u have one.
have fun!

Ive checking the device manager and Device 0 is on pio mode, device 1 is in DMA mode. I have my dvd buner as secondary master, and my dvdrom is slave. Ive deleted the burner a couple of times, even went into bios and that didnt help me out and i downloaded the nofroce drivers and it still didnt work.
So is there anything else that is possible.

Now i have a new problem, it read the dvd burner as dma and not pio with or with out the dma jumper in. But when i start to burn a dvd, it converts back to PIO is this due to xcopy dvd platinum yea i know this is a newbie program but iam still new. So is there there any way i can fix this or a program that burns better then xcopy dvd.

Not Dvd Shrink 3.0 beta.It works great. If you get errors, that'z on your end.I've not had a single prob with 3.0 beta.I have had loads of probs with the newer 3.1 version although. It must not be that crappy, more use it than anything else!!!Dvd Decrypter is great also but too many steps in the process.CloneDvd is also a good one.Chevy,Ford=you pick.Nero Recode 2 + Nero burnin' Rom spells fast and successful.

Still depends on the media. If using 'recommended' +R media from the Plextor list, it should write at 8x with 8x media, and 8x with 4x media. If using the 'compatible' media, 8x +R should write at 8x, 4x will write at 4x.

Well iam using dvd shrink the new i thank um 3.1 or somthing like that and Nero 2. The media iam using is sony +r but I only have one more disc and today iam going to burn a dvd and hoping it wont take no 1hr and 10min to burn a dvd a 4x, everyone says at 4x it should only take you 15min or 20 somthing like that. So if it does ill by TDK media and if that dont work, then it must be the dvd drive or could there be other problems.

If you are using DVDShrink, it sounds to me like you are doing more than just "burning a DVD", it sounds like you are ripping and transcoding before you burn.

The burning process should only take about 15min. at 4x. BUT, ripping and transcoding add a significant time onto this process. Are you only keeping track of the time it takes to burn here, or are you talking about a start-to-finish process, that is, ripping a DVD, then transcoding it, then burning it?

The Ricohjpn media will burn at 8x speed. Fuji and Memorex make these media. The burn portion should take about 8.5 minutes. Backing up the movie to the hard drive using DVD Shrink could take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes depending on how big the original dvd is.

I can rip dvds with dvd shrink from 30-45 min depending on how big the dvd is and what all i want burn. I know that will take awhile, the only thing iam worried about is that it take me and hour and 10min to burn the dvd files from dvd shrink on to a disc. Like everyone says it should only take 15min to burn a dvd at 4x. Just the burn time is really slow not the ripping. Is it the media or my burner it self.

turbo did you download the nforce chipset from the link I posted before? I think your problem has to do with the nforce chipset. Download it from the link I provided in my earlier posting.

I did download those drivers, 2.44 version. My dvd burner is reading as ultra dma 33 and my dvd rom is at pio mode ive uninstalled them a few times, but i thank i will settle with those setttings for now unless you have an idea on how to fix it. But just in case if it dont burn at 8x do you thank i should take back the burner and get a new one.

Was wondering if you tried using the Microsoft IDE drivers instead of the Nforce2 IDE drivers?

You'll have to rollback the drivers a couple of times to install the Microsoft IDE drivers within device manager if you're running XP.
