Plextor 8x DVD Writer at newegg

I posted a message on a site that a livewarehouse rep frequents, asking if it really takes 2 -3 business days to ship it out.

In any case, I just thought about it and realized that I may as well wait till Tuesday, and see if newegg gets it in then, since today is Saturday, and Monday is a holiday anyway...
Newegg would ship it out by Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

Then again, the benefit of USPS Priority is that they have Saturday delivery, and newegg's might not quite arrive by Friday...
It all depends on whether newegg gets it on Tuesday and whether Livewarehouse can ship it out the same day, instead of 2 - 3 business days later...

Well, I'd recomend newegg, cause there is no point in waiting for livewarehouse which may take 2-3 days. I'd recomend Newegg, order ASAP on Tuesday, latest it should ship is Wenesday, upgrade shipping to 2nd day, it's there by Friday.

The cost of upgrading to 2nd should be around that of getting it at Livewarehouse. $275 total.

Yes, I am going to wait, since nothing will happen till Tuesday anyway, no matter what, with the weekend and Labor Day...

If newegg changes the ETA again on Tuesday, then I'll order from LiveWarehouse...

By the way, LiveWarehouse shows it in black for $259.xx + shipping, but the available qty is -2...

Same here, if newegg changes the date again, I'd do livewarehouse. Unless of course BestBuy has it in the store by then, then I'd do it, but I doubght they will have it soon.

A problem with livewarehouse is the lack of shipping options, just Ground and Priority. I like newegg cause they have Saver, Express Two Day, and Express One Day.

I sold my old rig in parts and discovered that Priority Mail is faster than UPS Ground. Both are reliable... though if you are going to insure the package, UPS insurance is less. Priority Mail is cheaper for smaller boxes but once you get up to mid-size UPS Ground is less expensive.

Granted the insurance issue isn't a big deal if you buy it with a credit card.

FYI Livewarehouse checks out OK. They have a 6 month resellerrating of 8.11

Remember that BestBuy.com charges tax, so it will be $299.xx + tax.

If my BestBuy store has it today (my girlfriend and I need to buy a few things at the mall), I might be tempted to pay up, so as to get it a full week earlier.
However, $318 is a fair amount more than $265 or $275...
Too bad the BB 10% off coupons I received in the mail were for 2 or 3 weeks ago...

Apparently some people in Taiwan got their Plextor PX-708A and posted their preliminary tests, unfortunately in Chinese only:

http://forum.pcdvd.com.tw/showthread.ph ... genumber=3

Anyway regarding the 8X writing, the enclosed Plextor DVD+R disc (made by Taiyo Yuden) could be burned at 8X without any problem. Burning time is around 8 1/2 minutes for a full disc.

One guy made two coasters when trying to burn the Ritek 4X +R discs at 8X, and the other succeeded burning the CMC AZO (Mitsubishi dye ?) 4X +R discs at 8X. Since 4X +R discs are still quite expensive in Taiwan and they do not allow simulation burn, not much else has been reported although most Taiwan made 4X -R discs could be burned at 4X.

I gave a go with it on Babelfish, and the translation was not understandable. I could not pull out close to as much info as Telstar did, all I could see was the part about CMC media working at 8x.

Thanks Ian! I might order it now!

Yes, aviationwiz, I didn't see that post about livewarehouse.
My girlfriend is coming soon, and I haven't showered yet, so I am rushing a bit :)

I am not sure why livewarehouse doesn't have a link for this drive on their site. I have to go through the store.yahoo.com link in order to find it.
The black one however IS found when I do a DVD drive search at livewarehouse.

In any case, newegg still isn't showing it, so I am going to find who, if anyone, has it in stock right now other than livewarehouse, in case I can get a better price...
If not, I'll order it from them.

Has anyone here used xpcgear.com?
They seem to have newegg-like ratings, and have the drive in stock * for the same price shipped...

Reseller Ratings rating looked great so I ordered it with 2nd day air. Total came to $270. I called before I ordered and asked if it was in stock, and they said it was, and if I ordered within the next two minutes (which I did) they might get it out to me today, or tomorrow at the latest.

I ordered from them too, except I 'only' upgraded to 3 day select for about $8 extra, not 2 day shipping like you did.
My total was just under $265, basically the same as newegg...
I guess we know who will get it first :)

Coincidentally I called ahead, to see if it was in stock.
I figured I could also gauge their customer service that way.
They said they should be able to ship it out today. I may call to politely ask if this will be the case, in which case I should get it by Friday...

I guess we ordered just in time then :) !!!!

I guess our orders (and others no doubt) triggered an automatic price increase?
I have heard of supermarkets' computer systems tracking sales and adjusting prices accordingly.

The $250 was a typo. They just called me and said that it would cost $275. Oh well, I went ahead with it anyway. Still 2nd day air. So now my total is $295, OUCH. They do let you cancel your order though if you don't want it at $275. Keep in mind that newegg will probably NOT have it today, so this an OK price for the drive, and it is before anyone else.

I checked earlier over the phone with my order number about whether it would ship today, and they said it should go out today.
They never mentioned a price mistake at the time.
They haven't called me yet...
Just checked my home voicemail from work.

I'll probably use livewarehouse if they do call me, since they are $275 with priority shipping, which is better than $290 for the same (or slower) shipping.
This would also not be very good for my first experience with xpcgear.com, since I could have ordered from LiveWarehouse earlier today...

I just got off the phone with Plextor America Tech Support and asked what media will write at 8x and they said Verbatim is all that they recomend.

Verbatim DVD+R 4x media is made by either Mitsubishi Chemicals or Ricoh. So, we'll see what works by the end of the week. I plan on getting some either today or tomorrow.

I picked up my Verbatim media order tonight.
They were 4X - The store hadn't specifed the speed on their site, but I knew I could cancel if they had turned out to be 2.4X.

Between those and the Ricoh 4X, I should have enough 8X compatible media for a while :)

True.

I also have some of those left. Almost forgot, since I had been trying to use some of the Memorex after burning the TDKs for a while.

The TDK have a nice frosted top coating, which is thicker and more protective than the Memorex, but I keep mine in albums, so they are well protected regardless.

Based on DVDRHelp's media guide, looks like 4X +R DataLifePlus is MCC and plain old Datalife is Ricoh. Hopefully that's means you should end up with MCC consistently as long as you buy plus.

I missed the MCC 4X entry.
Seems those are sold in Europe, and possibly also the ones sold at Microcenter.
I really hope Ricoh-made 4X +R media is also 8X capable.

I have always gotten DataLife when I bought 4X Verbatim +R, which was always at Office Depot.

I wonder if some people posting simply post under the first 4X entry they see under the brand name, because I have never seen 4X +R DataLife Plus at a single Office Depot location, where some users who reviewed the media bought their 4X Verbatim +R.

I'm thinking since the initial entry to DVDRHelp is based on the ATIP, there's a good chance that if you can track DLP down, it'll be MCC.
