New 0E57 firmware for LiteOn LTR-52327S

Postby XIII on Tue Mar 16, 2004 4:23 pm

LiteOn released a new LiteOn LTR-52327S firmware called R52QS0E57.
You can find it here: http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/WebFW/LTR-5 ... QS0E57.zip

- Does this support the old or the new 52327S? Or both?
- What are your experiences with it? Worse or better than 0B?
- Why "57"? What's new about that?

I think that this update only supports the older models, because
the newer ones don't have EP-Roms anymore.

My experiences with this new firmware are rather bad.
For testing I took my Verbatim 32x CDRW 700MB CDs.

Here is a KProbe test with QS0C:

Here the new firmware QS0E:

As you can see the c1 and c2 errors have increased.
I used qs0c to see if there is any improvement considering
the "bad" QS0C firmware. But this is obviously not the case.
So far I only used CDRWs for testing. Perhaps the CDR quality
is better. But I don't know.

My own guess: this firmware is for both the old (0E) and the new (57) 52327S...

It will be interesting to see some scans of the CD-R format.

I tried QS0E on one of my 52327Ss, and I got a lot of C2 errors right at the end of the disc with a Philips (CMC) 48x CD-R. I didn't get nearly that many C2 errors with those discs with QS0B firmware. I'll try some other CD-Rs and post my results.

I will definitely change back to QS0B, because this new firmware
is a bad joke.

Does anybody know where I can find a working link to QS0B?
On the LITE-ON site the old firmwares are greyed out.

Always back up your existing firmware before flashing with a new one. Use mtkflash for this task (only for drives with MediaTek chipsets).

With that admonition out of the way, a great source for firmware is dhc014's firmware collection. However, he doesn't have a link to QS0B, so I will temporarily provide a link to it here. This is the original flasher, which can't be used as is to downgrade firmware versions. First you will have to "fix" it with Flashfix, which you can get from digi's web page.

Thank you for your help. This forum is really amazing and there are many experts who know what they are talking about.

PS: Is there any application that can give me some information about the drive's chipset?

Now I flashed my LTR-52327S with QS0B and the writing quality
improved extremely. (low C1 errors and no C2 errors at all)

Here is a K-Probe test with Verbatim 32x CD-RW 700MB:

I think the picture says all.

Once again, I thank you for your help.

You're welcome, and I'm glad you were able to restore your drive to better performance with the QS0B firmware.

As for applications that tell you about the chipset a drive uses, I don't know of any. But you can often find out by asking here or reading through the review for the drive.

has anyone complained to LiteON over this? It seems to be a serious issue. I mean, geez, their last 2 firmwars sucked... I've been considering buying the 52327s for a while, but keep being put off by the sheer craptacularity of their recent firmware support

The fw seems to affect the C1/C2 read scores as well.

I wrote a 32x TY disc with QS0E. Kprobe shows an avg C1 score of 1.xx. After flashing the drive with QS0B, the score with the same disc is 0.49x. :-?

The link to the binary version of QS0C works. I'll add others later.

Maybe the test results reveal a change in the reading methods used by the drive, which perhaps make the drive more sensitive to disc imperfections? I guess someone with a pair of 523252S could more easily conduct a test to find out. :P

thats what im thinking, afterall if you wnat the best quality cd then you want to know if the disc is error prone rather than the drive missing errors that a weaker firmware would be accustomed to ?

Exactly, I'm sticking with this newest firmware in spite of increased read errors. As another test above showed, the read errors weren't as high when testing a OE57-burned disc on a previous firmware...

My Verbatim 32X cd-rw test (this is based on a 3rd burn, after 2 complete burns, 1 quick erase and 1 full erase):

Perhaps I should revert back to an earlier firmware and conduct another reading test, but I'm not that concerned...

I suggest using the QS0B firmware.
As you can see in my last post I had no C2 errors.
I have 5 Verbatims 32x CD-RWs and this result only worked out
with one cd.

I don't know if these Verbatim CD-RWs are so good.
Obviously quality suffers from these high speeds.
For me working burned cds are really important because I backup
many documents. Perhaps I will use 4x CD-RWs to have a better quality.

By the way, you are using a 74 mins (650 MB) cd.
I bought 80 mins (700 MB) cds. In Germany,
Verbatim Europe delivers these cds and they only seem to have
700 MB versions.

Your KProbe result looks quite similar to the one I had with my
Verbatim cds.

I wish I could find the 700-MB versions! And is there anything better than
Verbatim for cd rewriting? I thought they were the undisputed kings as of late (well, I guess they're the only providers of 32X discs).

Also, I think one of us should conduct a C1/C2 error test on one of these discs with an older firmware...that would be most revealing and would suggest that it was the reading sensitivity of the drive that was improved, as opposed to decreased writing quality. I don't feel the need...on the other hand, I may try a c1/c2 test with Ritek & TY.

Well, I was going to update my Mom's firmware on her burner, but after reading this I'll leave it. She's also using Win98SE for about another month and it shows she has QSO8 as the firmware. I'm guessing this should be QSOB, but Win98SE is just reading it wrong.

Actually, your Mom's burner does have the QS08 firmware, which is an old version (probably about 1 year old). One of my 52327Ss came with QS08.
