NeroVision Express: PAL-> NTSC DVD RIP from VOB's !

Postby Spazmogen on Fri Jun 18, 2004 2:01 pm

Thanks to Ahead I was able to make a DVD -> DVD conversion with no loss of quality! No problems with Audio/Video synch at all either !

I had previously been messing about with TMPGEnc & AVSynth..but it was taking 24 hours to make an mpeg...then I was having audio/video synch issues after the video was encoded. The resulting video was watchable, but no where as good as the Nero produced product.

NeroVision Express did all of this 'transcoding' in about 5 hours! That's with a P3 1 ghz too.

I'm not easily impressed, but damn, Nero just keeps getting better & better!

Thanks to the whole team @ Ahead for an excellent product!

I've just got to stay away from www.Amazon.co.uk now.

The DVD's I bought will never be released in North America. They are uniquely English

if I can get my computer to take screen shots again, I'll make a webpage on how to do it.

I assume it will work in reverse: NTSC -> PAL.

I should point out that: my source PAL discs were not encrypted, and were not region coded. I didn't have any CSS to break. Only the PAL video format.

How'd you get NVE to read VOBs? Rename them to .MPG?
Can it, say, take several VOBs from different DVDs and slap them together with a menu WITHOUT reencoding (it's insistence on reencoding dvd format videos is the main reason I hate it)...

Edit (why I hate NVE): I do alot of DivX->DVD conversion for my roommate, and really don't like NVE for that purpose; about 40% of the time it drops the audio, and it always scales to full-screen what should be wide screen. Lately, I've been using DVD2SVCD to do AVI->DVD conversion, renaming the VOBs to MPG, and using Ulead to slap a menu on the whole thing. It's a huge pain...

Use the 'Make new Movie' feature.

I took 3 .vob's (all from the same DVD) and put them in order, put in the chapters, added the animated buttons & Menu etc.

It took about 5 hours to transcode it, but it worked!

I did not have to rename the .vobs at all.

It took a little bit of time to figure out the chapter(s)-it kept trying to over write my current chapter-but that was as hard as it got.

Best of all, I'm watching an NTSC DVD that only 5 hours ago, I couldn't watch on the tv at all !

Ahh...thanks.

Of course, you COULD just get this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... lectronics

It'll play DivX's, is easy to make region free, and it can convert PAL to NTSC. :)

Under $80, too!

I didn't even think we'd see a DVD player like that over here.

I knew they had them decoding DivX, but PAL <-> NTSC on the fly! Wow!

Next time around I guess.

I paid $329 CDn for the one I'm using (back in 1999 or 2000). It was a big deal then: it plays .mp3

I was thinking about getting that one (I want the DivX playback, don't have any PAL stuff); but I decided to get the Lite-On LVD-2010...as soon as I can FIND one, that is...and it better play DVD+R DL discs (you can pack alot of DivX on one of those!)...

OK.

I've taken a bunch of screen captures, but the problem is my ISP is having FTP problems, so I have no idea when I'll be able to upload the webpage.

But the process works!

I'm doing a second PAL -> NTSC transcode overnight.

Here's some captures to whet the appetite...

Make a "New Movie"
Image

Browse for the VOB's (or other media you want to add)

Add the chapters & configure the menu & animated buttons.

The PAL vs NTSC warning: just chose NO !

I chose to write it to the HDD so I can make muliple copies (I always make a safety copy).

Thanks for this info! I'm very much interested in preparing NTSC videos from PAL originals for my relatives in Canada.

OT
Spaz- your pictures seem to be running via a dutch university server :o :o

How does this work?
The irritating thing is that there isn't any real information re. image size, and since they run through a cgi, they're reloaded eveytime the post is accessed. :o

LOL.

It's a free server space that a student has, he's offering everyone 15mb of space. It's free until this fall.

Once my ISP solves its FTP issue (next day or so) I'll use my own webpage for the hosting.

Spaz, I just realized about your new web page because your signature.

Thanks a lot for all the effort, I'll try with the next PAL disc I receive, hell maybe some of the movies that I converted with TMPGEnc Plus, Sonic Foundry to trancode the AC3 Audio, and TMPGEnc Author to Multiplex again the files, oh, and Nero Recode if the files were more than 4.3 GB. Gee [-o<
Ciao,
macgirl.

Tired of hackintoshes and went with the real deal.

Thanks.

I've just downloaded the July 2nd update. I'll have to try it out again.

I hope they've added a smooth deinterlace feature or similar.

Going from 25fps -> 29.97 has made the video a bit jerky, but still watchable.

If they could smooth out the playback, I'd be a very happy man.
