FYI -

NEC has released a utility for the ND-2510A drives which allows the user to change the booktype of DVD+R DL media to DVD-ROM. So now you don't need to use a hacked firmware.

http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/tm.asp?m=71653

Downside, it only does bitsetting on DVD+R DL media, not DVD+R or DVD+RW.

NicW is also adding this functionality into DVDinfoPro.

What about Sony DRU-700A??

Postby speedlaser on Sun Jul 11, 2004 4:56 pm

I own a plextor 708A, 1 Liteon 851 external and 1 Sony Dru 700A.
I can tell you that this Sony or Liteon version if you prefer it is just a wonderfull piece of hardware. It crawl's everything speedy and fine apart a little problem with DVD-RW, wich i think it dislikite, althouhg it handles them at 4X. It's a bit pricey in the US, here in the € zone it costs about 160. But i tell you these: if you dont care DL, and have lot's of money to spend in verbatim media go for the Plextor 712. After all Plexie is still the King of perfection, and besides that, you get all the Premium series drives enhances with it.

I have been eying the 712 to see if it goes on sale to a reasonable level, otherwise, I'm considering a few of these other drives.......if the NEC or pioneer have a great sale, I might go that route too. Wish I had a ETA on the Pioneer 16xDL drive....

didn't someone have a problem burning these verbatim dvd-r 4x on the plex-712? what about 8x? their site says it's possible.

I'll bet you that tub of verbatims that you don't have anything to burn them with a month from now...

that's harsh! but sadly, very possibly true! still it was a good deal...

I think there should be some sort of celebration after I buy this thing, whatever drive it is...

Not trying to be harsh just calling it like I see it. :D

I think if you are looking to buy now (this generation of drives) you should just go for it.
Otherwise wait a while and a new crop will appear. Problem then is you will have the same questions about them.
Between the three you are considering you can't be wrong with any of them.
Good luck with your decision. :)

What's a reasonable level? It was on sale at Fry's Electronics in CA the other day for $149.95. Not sure if their online counterpart (Outpost.com) had it for the same price. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

Oh and that might have been after $20 MIR.

3x as much as the NEC ND-2500A on sale at Office Max this week, but reasonable in the general scheme of things, I guess. For a Plextor anyway.

Bet the DVD Forum wishes they had an ETA on approving dual layer DVD-R. :D

I actually checked that Frys "712". It was actually for the Px-708, they messed up calling it 12x, but since they didn't call it the 712 in the ad, they wouldn't give it up for that price....at least, thats what they said on the phone..

Is that mad dog drive at officemax, can you flash upgrade that to the 2510, did we prove whether or not that works yet?

What exactly is your price point axelrod? Both the Pioneer DVR-A07XL and the NEC ND-2510A are $79.99 online.

Just curious.

Wow, you found someone who spoke English at Fry's? Impressive. :)

Although that's odd since I've seen the Plextor 708A drive for less than that. I did check the Fry's number on Outpost though, and it does appear to be the 708 drive:

Well, I haven't seen a post from someone who said it didn't work for them yet. Thus far, seems like everyone who has tried DL media on their ND-2500A with Herrie's 1.07 V2 Beta 5 firmware (who's posted anyway) has been successful.

Now that I'm waiting for the A08 to come out, I'm really bummed that these Verbatim DVD-R's don't work on my Phillips Dell 2x Dvd Burner. I swear they said it was DVD+-R/W, but apparently it's only +R. Oh well...what can you do?

This thread lives on...

You've got the best of various types.

LG GDR-8162B 16X DVD-ROM
LG GSA-4120B 5X DVD-RAM/DL
NEC ND-2500A 8X DVD±RW
NEC ND-6100A 8X DVD+RW/DL
Pioneer DVR-A07XLB 8X DVD±RW
Plextor PX-712A 12X DVD±RW
Panasonic DVD-S47S Home DVD Player
Panasonic DMR-E85H Home DVD-RAM/-R/HDD Recorder

ND-6100A and Panasonic DVD-RAM/HDD recorders look especially attractive, but are not available where I am.

Hey axelrod, did you ever buy a burner?
That Benq 1600 in the Pacific Digital box looks kinda tempting...
