Problem with my Pioneer DVR-107D

This is my first post, and judging by some of the responses here, this is a great forum. I hope someone out there can help me with my problem.

My DVD-R (Pioneer DVR-107D) has been working fine for about 6 months until tonight it suddenly stops recognising DVDs, both blank and real ones. I can't burn, I can't get anything showing up.

I saw a recent post that had a similar, but not identical problem.

I use WinXP Pro. My Computer shows the drive there, well enough. But as I say it doesn't recongise any DVDs. What it DOES do is to recognise CDs and is able to burn CDs no problem.

This is where the difference lies. I don't know much about hardware admittedly, but if its recognising CDs and not DVDs I doubt that its a cable problem.

Any suggestions? Please reply either here, my email, or I use Yahoo Messenger and MSN as well.

Thanks so much in advance. This is actually the second time this has happened to me. The first time I just went and bought a new one. I want to avoid that if possible.

Maybe the DVD-lens is defect or dirty. The CD-lens is not the same lens, so it can be that the CD-section works and the DVD-section not

see if removing it from the device manager works

it should re-recognize it and set it up again

also make sure DMA is turned on


but of course these are software fixes, your problem is suggesting a hardware issue


if all else fails, just stand in front of your drive with a long coat on and then open your front and flash it :

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the tips.

1) Tried a lens cleaner. Didn't work.
2) Also tried removing it from Device Manager and reinstalling. Still the same. Checked DMA - enabled.
3) I only have the one computer
4) It makes this loud clicking sound now when either accessing a CD (successfully) and trying to access a DVD (never successful).

What could be wrong?

Normally, I'd take it to the shop and ask them to fix it, but I'm in Taiwan and my chinese ain't good.

Any other clues or tips? Is this a common problem? This has happened to me with another model before.

Well thanks for the tips guys. I came to the conclusion the drive was stuffed, so I coughed up the dough for a new one.
