Industry "insiders" said prices were going to drop to about $5 a disc this summer. I've seen that with some of the Ritek manufactured stuff and Verbatim is getting close.

Ricoh DL media is already about that level, but Verbatim media being available at $5 per disc would be nice

That's interesting, thanks. Hopefully Amazon will lower their price below $18.99 within a month of my purchase, then I can ask for a credit of the difference.

The key is competition. Right now, there are only a handful of DL suppliers. Whereas SL media is support by 10 or 20 or more suppliers. Once you get enough suppliers, someone will get aggressive and drop the price. I'd be willing to pay about $2 for DL media for regular use, and $3 for special uses where I really need it. $5 is too much though. I wonder how long til most of the players in SL get into DL?

10 or 20 suppliers of single layer? Hrm... much more then that I think!

As for who and when they are getting into Dual Layer, let's take a look:

Verbatim/MKM -> They Pioneer'd the format, currently selling
RiData/Ritek -> Currently selling
Ricoh -> Currently selling (OEM product through Ritek)
Optodisc -> No plans to begin selling dual layer at this time
Prodisc -> Production has begun last I heard (I think)
Maxell -> Currently OEM'ing through MKM and Ricoh
Taiyo Yuden -> Rumours of beginning production of DVD-RDL
Lead Data -> Unlikely to make dual layer any time soon
CMC -> Currently producing and selling Dual layer
Moser Baer -> No word yet (that I know of)
Princo -> Not even sure they CAN produce dual layer :P
Nanya -> Going out of business!
Daxon -> No word yet

Does anyone have any additions or changes to the list?
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

Futureshop had them for $4 (Canadian) a disc in a 25-spindle a while back (Memorex).

So Infomedia has a DVD+RDL now available (probably not ready for sale yet it looks, but getting close), and Plasmon is working on something (although they sell technology/equipment, not media).

Infomedia has sold there media for some months now.
Infact this media was released prtey close after ritek and cmc.
Prodisc has made some disc's.

PLasmon has technology ready for production of dual layer disc's. However they also need customers who are willing to take some risk.
