Blu-Ray preferred 4:1 over HD-DVD? What do YOU think?

Postby dolphinius_rex on Wed Jul 13, 2005 1:54 pm

Regarding this article posted also on CDRLabs' front page:
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/050713/135010.html

Although (as Ian mentioned on the front page) this poll is quite likely sponsered by the Blu Ray Disc Association (or whatever they're called), from my own experiences, I don't find the results hard to believe at all. Most of the people I know could care less about HDDVD, and those who do, only care about what movies will be released in that format and their playability, and have no interest in HD-DVDR in any way.

I'm curious what the users here think?

I'm guessing that these were the actual results of the study. But, because neither technology is available, they had the features of each layed out side by side and asked people which they thought was better based solely on this info. Who knows what info they presented and how truthful it was.

IMO.. studies like this are a crock of shit. In another few weeks, we'll probably see one done by the DVD Forum stating HD DVD was chosen 5 to 1 over BD.

I wouldn't be surprised at all!

But that's one of the reasons why I'm asking people here, who are FAR more educated in these sorts of things, then the average polled consumer

What idiot (after looking at what each side is capable of) would pick HD-DVD over Blu-Ray? I don't think I've heard ONE person (sans Toshiba and co. employees) on the internet who was in favor of HD-DVD. Toshiba needs to get real and concede quickly, they are destined to lose...

Do you prefer a car that gets 100mpg or a car that gets 60mpg?

I agree that the test was flawed,I personally don't care what format wins as long as the movie titles are plentiful and the price is low.I think the new format will be in a small area of Blockbuster,Frys, etc for a long time and will be a niche market(read:DVD-AUDIO).
As for recordable media I don't care for either format because I hardly use DL now,Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will be for HDTV and I doubt consumer video editors/encoders could do it justice.Forget about making copies of HD DVD's,they will be heavily encrypted and the copies will be worthless when using a HDMI connector.

Blu-Ray Disc appears to be superior according to side by side specifications and capabilities. ( and after I've read numerous articles on the subject )
I vote for the superior features/technology.

For a PC I'm definately into max storage capability as long as performance and compatibility don't suck.

For a dvd player... do I care? I mean... if they both play the movie in the same HD format at the same bitrate... does anyone care? I just hope they pick one so I don't have to wait an extra 2 years to buy a combo drive.

Last I heard Blu-Ray was more expensive to manufacture than HD-DVD, since for HD-DVD most current DVD-capable lines only needed minor retooling.
Or will that point become negligable once world + dog + cat start producing BRD's?

Well, from what I've heard on the "inside" of things. Most people will start manufacturing HDDVDRs pretty quickly with respect to BluRay... and the initial costs will be much lower then Manufacturing BluRay, as no new equipment is needed, only a few upgrades. BluRay however should work out to the same price in the long run however due to lower manufacturing costs (if I remember correctly... gotta check this one!) even though the initial cost will be much higher due to new hardware needed.

In the long run, the new hardware costs, and greater difficulty in manufacturing such high density media... we should see much less competition from lower end manufacturing plants (read many Chinese and Hong Kong Based) so the quality level should be higher in the media as well. Hopefully we will see less code abuse and screwing around with brand names as well!

Of course, this is all still theoretical until manufacturing actually begins, and we see the stuff starting on the market.

this also means media will stay expensive.

well I am still not sure how such a poll is relevant as one cannot jusge the quality for the end user etc., all we have are the glossies of each one...hopefully nobody buys based on the glossies

That's why I didn't ask which one you'd buy... or even which one is "better". I am only asking for people's preference thus far.

not to be argumentative (really am not as your posts are always good) but I am not sure how anyone can have a preference...any preferences now are based on what marketing you have read and not on hands on use....for me I think they are both nonsense....fighting it out and all...

for me I need to be able to see that MANY users (only pros here since I cannot buy HD or BR) have used the products and have been able to critique them properly, which is not the case here.

I would like a unified format, in the end there will be 2...and all players will play both, the only recorders that will sell will be the next "super Multi HD BD" that will record both....so in the end the only thing that will matter is what the media testers (i.e. you) have to say about burns and media quality. Of course we cannot do this, so in my opinion any such surveys or preferences at this stage of the game is spurious at best....but certainly interesting to argue about!!!!

Now if only TY would make a silk-screened surface!!!! :D

While it's true that all most of us have to base opinions on so far is marketing... you can't deny the very human trait of forming opinions on things without having a very good reason too

But actually, what I prefer to say in this case, is that unlike with DVD+R and DVD-R, there are some VERY big differences between HDDVD and BluRay. The differences in capacity and copy protection possabilities are the two main ones people seem to be looking at. Personally, I see capacity as being a much more important feature then the ability to protect content from being copied... obviously movie studios don't entirely share this opinion with me

nice points again dolph....but as I said above I do not think it matters at all....the likely scenario is that both will be out there, and end users will have drives that do both, so in the end it will be guys like you who do the reviews who will sway people more (unless HD buys out BR or other way around). In any case the cost will be prohibative for a long time...so I am happy waiting for your Benq 1640 review.

BTW where is the review...takin yer sweet time (HAHA). Seriously thought....quiet on the burner front so I am looking forward to the 1640.

Well, I don't think anyone's expecting this poll to be 100% accurate in foresight :D

As for the review, I got really sick with some nasty virus... it's kept me off my feet for 4 days already, and I only just returned to work today! :o And This weekend I'm spending time with my G/F for our 3 year anniversery together... so give it some time yet  (the G/F always has to come first, if I want there to be a G/F in the future [-X ). But there's good progress. With my luck, it'll be out around the same time they pop in to stores
