New plextor PX-716 firmware on the way

Postby dolphinius_rex on Wed Sep 28, 2005 12:56 pm

I just received word that Plextor will be releasing a new firmware for their PX-716 series of burners, likely within a weeks time.

Known changes include:
-Making MAM-A CD-R media work in their drive

(you get 3 guesses where I got this info, and the first 2 don't count :P)
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

How about a change that's actually useful, like 16x media actually burning at 16x with low and even PIE/PIF error patterns, like other 16x burners?

Not sure what you're referring to, I've found that the PX-716 is actually quite a good burner. Not as good as the DW1640, but probably about the same as the Pioneer DVR-109.

My A09 blows both my 716A (TLA #0308) and my 716UF (TLA #0203) away in terms of 16x burning. For one, it generally burns at full 16x on my 16x media (MCC004, MCC03RG20, TDK003, TTH02) whereas the overly-sensitive PowerRec feature on the Plextors almost always drops the speed to 12x or lower. Then, in terms of error scans, the Pioneer-burned discs generally have lower PIE/PIF levels than the Plextor burns. At 8x they're about even, but at 16x the A09 (and my LG 4163B) beats the Plextors handily.

Well, it'd be hard to try TYG04 since it doesn't exist  I'm assuming you meant TYG03, which I have not tried, but MCC004 and MCC03RG20 are certainly considered quality media. I don't generally mess with lower quality media unless I'm experimenting.

I could quite honestly not care any less about MAM-A CD-R's on the PX-716. :o

Umm hate to break it to you by TY is usually a HIGHER quality of media than MCC, not a LOWER one. MCC usually means Verbatium which usually means CMC QA

I own a 716 (0203), a 109XL (1.58 ) and a Benq1640 (bslb) and the 716 usually beats the others when I use high qualtiy media...ofcourse when I experiment with lower qualtiy media ALL BETS ARE OFF due to media variances.

Give TY a try and see for yourself.

i don't think he meant that the TY was lower media

he just said that he generally uses higher quality media, but to me higher quality is TY and not a whole lot is higher

dolp might say maxell is higher, i think thats what he likes

he'll correct me if im wrong

I am well aware of TY and have used plenty of the 4x and 8x medias. I wasn't saying TY was lower quaity than MCC. As far as MCC QA, MCC made in Taiwan by CMC or by Prodisc has higher quality than the medias those companies make with their own media codes.

True... but look at some of the Made in India crap that's been causing problems for Verbatim.... and the stuff made by Prodisc isn't exactly steller either in my opinion

I like them all. It's hard to say which is fastest! I am split between the 716 and 1640 on that one. Boy it all depends on many factors.
I burn at 8X these days with cheap media and 12X with good media! I only do 16X for rquests! LOL. All of those drives are outstanding in their own way!

I use my 716 and 109 to speed read and feed my 1640 and 3500. But I could reverse that with my 109 and 1640! Both fast readers.

Bring on the FW change!

That's ok that they didn't mention it actually.... supposedly they DIDN'T fix it after all (this is from other sources of mine still experiencing the same problem as before the update).

burn 16x at 16?

Postby seanc on Fri Oct 21, 2005 8:58 am

I've had issues with former firmware not burning verbatim 16x (printable top and non-printable) NOT going to 16x with a full disc. Anyone test if it does a better job with that media?

That's just PowerRec for you; it's been like that every firmware revision since the TLA #0000 drives. Sometimes PR will decide a disc is of high enough quality to burn at full 16x and it will, but more often than not it drops the speed to 12x.

Just about to install 1.09; has anyone experienced any issues with it?
Since it is still very new, I wanted to see what people's experiences were, good or bad.
