BenQ 1620Pro - BIG problems!!

Postby Tobber on Fri Dec 23, 2005 10:45 pm

Hi there,

I have a big problem regarding my DVD-RW drive BenQ 1620Pro.

It just doesn't burn any DVD+R anymore. Haven't had the chance to try DVD-R yet. The drive just stops with the lead-in and aborts. I tried different media-brands (Verbatim, Ricoh, Ritek) and tested the drive with another PC but no luck...

It writes CD-R just well. It reads DVDs. The drive detects the DVD correctly and offers correct writing speeds. Tried different versions of Nero and other freeware burning programs. It's always the same.

But wait, here comes the tricky part. This isn't the first time I experience those problems. This is my THIRD drive that shows the same problems. The first one lasted for about 5 months, the second one 1 month and the third one about 1 week or in other words 10 DVDs...

I haven't changed my configuration since last year. I reinstalled WinXP when I received my third drive. The drive runs in DMA-Mode, I use the latest firmware.

Any suggestions???

Thanks for every answer and plz excuse grammar & style... I'm not a native speaker :)

Not to worry, Tobber - I never would have guessed.

You do a lot better than some of our native born.

You must give your system components spects (CPU,HD, memory, above all your system power supply) for the people to be able to give any reasonable and useful advise.

Ok, here's my configuration:

beQuiet 400W power supply
Asus A7N8X-Deluxe
Athlon XP-M 2600 @ 2400 MHZ ~ 45°
1 GB MDT-RAM @ 200 MHZ (Memtest finds no errors)
Gigabyte nVidia Gforce 6800
1x S-ATA Hitachi 160 GB
1x IDE WD 1200JB 120 GB (Primary Master)
1x IDE Maxtor 80 GB (Primary Slave)
1x Plextor DVD-Rom (Secondary Master)
1x BenQ 1620Pro DVD-RW (Secondary Slave but tried Secondary Master alone as well)

WindowsXP SP2 (since third drive. Before I used WinXP SP1)
IDE, CPU, Network driver nVidia nForce 5.10
VGA-Driver nVidia Forceware 81.95

OK, that's about everything, have I forgotten something? The system runs quite smoothly. Don't have had any Bluescreens or something like that for quite some time now. The only problem is with my DVD-RW drive. Of course, I can't rule out the possibility that those ... at BenQ just sent me 3 defective drives but I'm not as certain of it anymore... :)

It appears that you have done a reasonable amount of testing.

Are both of the computers that you've used for testing using N-Force IDE drivers?

No, the other one uses a VIA-Chipset.
Just want to make sure that nothing in my computer is killing off my DVD-RW drives one by one. Virus, defective cable?? Something like that. Maybe it sounds silly but after 3 drives nothing sounds much more sillier to me than getting a fourth drive and having the same problems all over again...

BTW: Merry Christmas :)

VIA chipsets can be very weak.

Have you had problems when the VIA are not involved?

Have you had problems when the VIA are involved?

Problems with and without VIA?

Haven't had any problems with the via-chipset either. I use a DVD-RW with the via-chipset as well and it works just fine.

My problem is that the BenQ DVD-RW just refuses to burn DVDs. This happend when installed in my system running on a nforce2-chipset. It just doesn't work in a via-chipset pc as well...

A little late but Merry Christmas!

To summarize, you said-

DMA is enabled.

Using latest bios. BenQ bios release or third party?

You tried the BenQ on two different computers.

Tried different media.

CD-R writes ok.

Reads DVD ok.

You tried the BenQ on the second IDE channel as the master device. Did you set the jumper to master?

As a final test I would try to disable all third party applications that auto start. XP burning engine, anti-virus, Alcohol, Movie Factory etc.... Then try using Nero again and post the error log statement here. Something in the log might provide the answer.

BenQ original Bios.

Jumper is set to master.

Will try your suggestion with the autostart and errorlog. May take me a day.

Thanks for your help so far :)

OK, so here we have 2 logs.

Log 1 is with installed nvidia-ide-drivers. Curiously enough nero reports DMA-DISABLED... IDE-Driver reports DMA-ENABLED.

Log 2 has been taken with deinstalled nvidia-drivers. Doesn't change anything. DMA is enabled but the drive still stops with the lead-in.

Hmm, that would be pretty strange.

I tested A-Grade Ricoh, A-Grade Verbatim and Ritek.

All where burnt pretty well und now aren't burnt anymore...

Tobber,
Maybe you have been unlucky and had three drives fail but sometimes it's the media or system it's installed on. You tried the BenQ in two different computers, what do they have in common? The BenQ, the media, maybe the Nero version...and what else???. Is Nero IN-CD installed? Is Roxio installed?

Please try the following-
Can you try another media (+R) as Dodec suggested?
Also, please try -R media.
Try to write about 500 mb of data to a +R disk.

Here is a quote from another forum (I lost the link and can't give credit), it may be helpful-
"Thanks all - tried everything you offered but in end, I uninstalled Nero V6.6.0.12 and used clean up tools to get rid of all traces of Nero. I installed Nero V6.3 and all worked OK - could make DVD+Rs again that were usable.

On closer visual examination of DVDs produced by V6.6.0.12 I found there was no recording on start of track near centre of DVD. I compared this with DVD+R creat with V6.3 and recording starts at beginning of track.

Why??? - Idon't know."

Please keep posting. I'm curious what the final solution will be.

bill said some of what i was gonna say.

try other media. TY if you can get some is a good idea.
try DVD-R.

important: if you can, try installing the drive in another computer and see if it works there.

shouldn't matter, but if you have a bit of time, try removing all other optical drives you have leaving just the BenQ 1620.

what firmware do you have on it?

I think I did get those 3 defective drives in a row... lucky me.

Sometimes the DVD-RW just doesn't recognize a blank DVD+R / DVD-R. If I put an CD or DVD into the drive it does read it. AFTER that it recognizes the blank DVD as well...

I tried a DVD-R (Verbatim) as well... same problems.

Firmwareversion of the DVD-RW is "B7W9". The problems began with version "B7V9" so I upgraded. The last drive was running well on B7W9 and the problems started with the latest FW...

All other optical drives are removed at this time.

The last drive didn't work on the other PC as well. Didn't test this one but somehow I suspect..........................

I tried burning with 3 different programs or versions of a program. Nero 6.6, Nero 7 Demo and CD BurnerXP Pro. Problem remains the same.

After the last defective drive was replaced I reinstalled WinXP and formatted C:\. I didn't install Roxio, InCD, DaemonTools or something like it.

I contacted the technical support of BenQ... again. I asked them to replace the 1620Pro with a 1640. Maybe I get lucky for a change :D

I'll keep you posted...

Just wanted to tell you... after a VERY, VERY LONG struggle with BenQ, I received an 1640 today.

It works for now so I'm burning like HELL right now :D

Thanks guys for your help... see you soon (or hopefully not that soon :))

Yeap, the 1640 is a pretty fine drive... LEAD-OUT is WAY faster compared to the 1620... I like it =D>
