Nero 6 Backitup Why 4+hrs for incremental backup?

Postby vstice on Wed Jan 18, 2006 8:34 pm

Did one full backup of partitions C: thru H: with verify
to DVD+R. Worked fine. Took just 1hr33mins to 4 DVD+Rs (8x)

After a few days, did a "Modify Backup" for the above
full backup, choosing "Incremental."

This was to a blank DVD+RW.

Compression is OFF.

The backup worked, verified OK (with a few glitches on the
windows partition), BUT (and this is a VERY BIG BUT)

the initial phase of the backup, where it is
"Calculating backup size" took more than 4 hours.

The full backup was about 13GB to 4 DVD+Rs, and the
".nbi" file was about 30MB and was the HDD copy, and
the backup size eventually calculated was a mere 139MB
or so.

I was running no other applications, no active anti-viral
software. I had recently done a virus scan with F-PROT,
a spy-ware scan using just updated AdAware and SpyBot
software, and had just done a re-boot.

I tried again the following day.
It was still very slow doing the backup size thing.
I ran Windows system monitor and saw the CPU was at 100%,
with very little HDD read/write activity.
I ran WinTop and saw, as expected, that Backitup was using
94+% CPU.

Anybody know what the blazes is taking so long? Even a scripting
language like Python could read all directories, match them against
a file like .nbi for file needing backup, and do it faster.

My system is Win98SE, with all critical updates from MS,
Dell Optiplex GX1, PIII (slotted) 450MHz, with 128MB of PC100 Mem
(ECC).

The only mechanism I can think of, which could cause this process to
be so slow is:

Every file is checked against the .nbi (in this case 30MB in size)
via a brute force linear search, with absolutely no optimizations
which could speed it up, such as:
Search filnames in same sequence as .nbi, remembering last pos in .nbi.
Sort filenames in .nbi and do binary search.
Build hash table of filenames in .nbi.

Any of the above optimizations could improve the search times by at least
a factor of 1000.

Even with the current crop is 2-4GHz CPUs, and PC2700+ mem,
the much larger HDDs and numbers of files would justify doing
one of the above optimizations!

Note: The full backup of partitions c: e: f: g: h: (e: is the swap partition),
took only 1hr33mins, for 5935 folders, 111668 files totaling 13.59GB, and used
4 DVD+Rs.
The incremental backup took 4hrs18min (to DVD+RW) for about 1100 files
totaling just 130MB.

This works out to a glacial 0.13+ seconds, on avgerage, for each file!

I have included the log file produced by backitup and by InfoTool.

Thanks,

Verne Tice

Hi Verne,

I'll have to test this and see what is going on. I'll first test with our latest Nero BackItUp 2.0x that comes with Nero 7 just to see if this is already resolved. Then I'll test with your version of Nero BackItUp on the same system. This way I can see if this is just an old issue, an issue with all builds, or just an issue on your system. Give me a few days and I'll respond back on this forum with my findings.

Best Regards,

Craig

Hi Verne,

Sorry for the delay. But I was finally able to find time to test this issue, and I'm not able to duplicate this issue on my systems.

I'm running Windows XP using an HP740B Recorder and I did an initial FULL backup of the C:\ drive of 12.5GB of data to 3 DVDs. This took me 1hour and 36minutes.

I then added 175MB of data to the C: drive, and then did an incremental backup. And this took a total of 4min and 43 seconds to backup. It prompted me for the last disc, which had the NBI file on it, then the second, and then finally the first. And then it did the backup.

There must be something unique on your system that I'm not properly duplicating.

Regards,

Craig

Nero 6 Backitup Why 4+hrs for incremental backup?

Postby vstice on Mon Jan 23, 2006 8:18 pm

Craig,

This may only be a problem when the data are spread across several partitions. On my system the partitions are all FAT32.

Also, how much time was spent "calculating backup size", how many files and folders, what was the size of the .nbi file?

Would it help if I install Win98se, then Nero and try to duplicate the problem?

Hi Verne,

Damn, I did test under the wrong OS platform didn't I.

Let me retest this tomorrow on a Windows 98 system. I'll have to reinstall this fresh, as the one system I had 98 Imaged on crapped out on my last week and I've been meaning to get 98 setup on another system and image it for some time.

Looks like you have 6 partitions on there, so I'll try that. This may take a few days as I have other priorities going on at the same time.

The Calculation was done in around a few minutes. I did not time that part exactly, but it was very fast. The .NBI file was 29MB in size. And it had 25 folders and over 6,000 files.

Craig

Craig,

The time spent doing the "Calculating backup size" can be determined from the backup log. It is the time between the first and second time stamps in the log (see comments in the log extract at end of this message.)

Divide this time by the number of files in the full backup. If the result is more than a few micro-seconds per file, then you are seeing the same problem I have, though probably much reduced by today's much faster CPUs and memories.

A modern CPU, say 3.2GHz, with PC 2700 DDR RAM, is 20 to 30 times faster than my circa 2000 system (450MHz, PC100 ECC SDRAM). A time of 241 minutes on my system would map to 8 to 12 minutes on a modern system.

Extract from log file: (comments follow "****")

Craig,

A question and a suggestion.

Did you check this with both Nero 7 and Nero 6?

You should use the .nbi file on your HDD (listed in the welcome screen in BackItUp, just double-click it) to eliminate delays due to handling DVDs.
