Turn NEC 3550/4550 Into 3551/4551 - Adds Labelflash

Postby Ian on Tue Feb 07, 2006 12:14 pm

I can't imagine NEC is going to be too happy about this article at cdrlab.pl (no relation to us):

http://cdrlab.pl/article_strona_2737_1.html

I wonder if Labelflash actually works though. I'd also like to see if its possible to turn a 3550 into a 4551.

this subject being debated in others forums and some people have claimed that they already cross flashed the 4550 to 4551 and all the functions of genuine 4551 are fully workable., others claim this is not case with some that are claiming NEC would bring legal action against the sites who promote this option.

Funny... you'd think NEC would WANT people to have label flash drives, even without the royalty payments. The only chance Labelflash has of not dying in the next couple months is if there is a sudden demand for it immediately... and it's just not happening :P

That's not really NEC's call though. It's up to Yamaha and Fuji since they're the ones getting the royalties.

Before I buy into this, I'd like to see someone actually print a Labelflash disc using a hacked drive. That's one thing cdrlab.pl didn't do.

I'd give it a shot if anybody knows where the files are hidden, got a 4550 now and plenty of other drives so wouldn't hurt me that much if one dies. Well found it, just didn't push the right link button I guess, don't read Polish. Now If I can figure it out....

word on the street seems to be that some drives will work with Label Flash, and some drives won't. Since the media is only available in Europe, and at a VERY high price, we won't have a huge amount of people volunteering to try it out I suspect.

Hey lads&lals,
I've found link to this topic analysing server logs :)
The article about turning 3550->3551->4550->4551 is very popular now. I've received 23 confirmations from users of 'job well done 4550->4551' and 2 confirmations of '3550->4551'. And no failures. It seems that this is stable enough to do it at home :)

I understand that most of you cannot read Polish :) so if you have any questions - just ask.

Package you need to overclock ND-3/4??0/1A to ND-4551A can be found directly here:
http://cdrlab.pl/file_detale_2738.html
Just click on "Pobierz plik" (Download file) link and you are done. File contains most up to date LLS.DLL and tools neccesary to upgrade or downgrade any 3550 to 3551, 4550 and 4551. Just follow the scenneshots on this page:
http://cdrlab.pl/article_strona_2737_1.html
I hope rest is self explanatory. If not - write here and I'll help you.

I was not sure if I shall put this comment here, because now NEC would be able to 'convince' me to take down those pages. But I hope not.

And about media cost. Fuji's DVD LabelFlash media costs around 1.3USD. It is not that much...

My drive successfully printed a couple of pictures onto the media side disk tattoo like, hardest part was getting Nero to enable label flash.

Just curious, which folder does the labelflash driver get dropped into?

Dartman, what steps did you have to go through to get it to work? :)

Who is applying the pressure?

Postby HenryNettles on Wed Feb 15, 2006 3:28 pm

Apparently Nec (or someone else) is threatening people who
enable cross-flashing the 3550 to a higher model. There is a
long thread over at cdfreaks

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=166962

Liggy was (to the best of my knowlegde) the first person to
enable cross-flashing on the 3550. I was a beta-tester for
his software. The first trial didn't work, the second trial
did work (this on approximately December 18th of 2005). I was
able to cross-flash my 3550 to a 4550, and successfully write
to DVD-RAM. This was not exactly a big deal to me, I really
could care less about DVD-RAM, and I certainly don't care
about LabelFlash. But it was there, and so I played with it.

At about this same time, Liggy apparently received pressure
from someone or something, and decided not to release his
software for cross-flashing. He asked me not to give his
software to anyone else, and I have honored his request.

Reading between the lines, it appears that someone else spread
the software. Apparently someone who was beta-testing, or
someone who was helping in some other way.

To this day, Liggy denies that Nec pressured him. And yet, it
is obvious that SOMEONE pressured him. Who, if not Nec? It's
obvious that Liggy is not going to say. Does anyone here know
just who is applying this "pressure"?

I'm guessing its either NEC and/or the companies behind Labelflash (Yamaha and Fuji). Most likely the later since Liggy's NEC Drive Convertor is still on their website and no one, including NEC, seems to have a problem with it.

At this point, I don't think they're going to be able to stop it. Even YSS is getting in on the action:

http://homepage2.nifty.com/yss/355024551/355024551.htm

I wouldn't be surprised if general hardware review websites start putting together articles on this.

I dropped the lss.dll into the core directory in 7 and after that label flash worked, never could get it to work in 6. I used the program Ian posted the link to to get it to work, it pretty much has everything you need to make it go, including the dll and flashers.

I have dropped the IIS.dll in core directory of Nero7.0.1.4 but still there is no sign of any Labelflash either active or grayed out (since I have not yet have NEC drive with Labelflash connected, hopefully to night will have).

I have now NEC 4551A connected and have dropped LLS.DLL in Core directory of Nero 7.0.1.4 but still no sign of Labelflash, do you happen to know why and what is the fix for it. Thanks.
