Maxell DVD+R media

Postby dodecahedron on Sat Feb 11, 2006 2:42 am

i'm not too much up to speed on media brands/manufacturers etc. (not too much choice here), so...

anyone know who makes Maxell DVD+R and DVD-R media, 8x ?
here's a picture from the store's website:

Image

and how good is it ?
especially on a BenQ DW1620 drive.

Hello!

Not easy to say :o

If it made in Japan, Maxell made it. I have the -R 8x, the media looks ok, but have a higher PIF-total, 1400-3000. With TY-media I have mostly under 300 PIF-total.

The media could also made by Ritek (Taiwan), I dont like R03, the quality can be good but also bad, it is very various; -R could be G05, which burns good on my 1640, but I read to often the stability ia awful. I heard it could also CMC, but never had Maxell with CMC-code

Dodeca, the 8X -R discs work really well on my 1640. Yuden002s are better though ;). Never tried TYG02.

i'm going to buy the +R.
so far DVD-R doesn't work out too well on my BenQ DW1620 :(

here's my results with DVD-R. two DVD+R scans for the sake of comparison. you can see why i conclude the drive doesn't like -R :(

basically i've given up on using DVD-R on this drive, and what stockpile of -R i have i'll keep till i buy my next drive. in the meanwhile i'll use +R. and since i want to keep the TY i have for important stuff (can't get it here, i imported it from the states, it's a pain) i'm looking for some other +R that will work reasonably well.
there's Verbatim which seems to be OK but i want to see if i can get some other stuff that's good.
25 spindle of Verbatim 16x DVD+/-R: 85 shekels = $18 (73cent/disc)
50 spindle of Verbatim 8x DVD+/-R: 158 shekels = $34 (67cent/disc)
25 spindle of Maxell 8x DVD+/-R: 61 shekels = $13 (52cent/disc) so i want to check them out (if they're any good).

Maxell 8x DVD+R can be their own MAXELL002 or RITEKR03... it's possible you might get CMCMAGE01 also. In any of the three cases, the results with your DW1620 should be pretty good.

Probably one of the best RITEKR03's out there

Too bad there is no such thing as a good RITEKG05 :P

well, burned 2 CDSpeed test discs to try this media out. one at the rated 8x another at 12x. i'm no expert but these seem to be pretty good. the 8x is nearly as good as the 8x burns of my TDK YUDEN000 T02 and Verbatim MCC 003.
