Looks like they confused Maxell 16x DVD-Rs with Maxell 16x DVD+Rs. Also, if their Verbatim 8x DVD+RDL was scratched... why did they use it? :o (it's NOT hard for reviewers to get this media, especially in the US or Europe!!).

I think the speed is really lame. 18x recording is no faster then 16x on an LG drive. 10x recording is maybe a minute faster then 8x on a P-CAV drive.
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

Burn quality looks pretty poor. 18X burning/10X DL burning nothing more than a useless marketing gimmick IMO. I guess since all drives have pretty much the same specs, Plextor has to justify their insane price somehow.

Yeah, speed wise, I'll stick to the 4167. Much better quality*, too.

Too bad it can't rip at 18x...that might be useful.

After the huge let-down that was the PX-716 (great ripper, so-so burner), I'll be avoiding Plextor for awhile. As long as I can get 2-3 4167's or DW1655s for the price on one Plextor, and the cheaper drives burn better/faster, why bother?

*=Although not nearly as bad as I expected, the PIF seems way high. And lets see 'em do an 18x write like LG does a 16x...that'll show some improvement!
BenQ 1655, BenQ 1620, LG 4167, Plex PX-716SA, Samsung SH-S162L, SH-S182M, Pioneer 111D, Lite-On SHM-165H6S and 1.9TB of HDDs to feed 'em and an X2/4800 to crunch for 'em.

Really? My does fine with TY media and that's about it. It kicks major butt as a ripper, though (with speedread enabled)...It'll rip faster than my old Lite-On DVD-ROM, Lite-On Combo, Samsung DVD burner, or rip-lock-removed NEC 3540.

And does great with badly damaged discs my other drives can't even begin to read.

I am looking to replace my 3540 (which I only use for ripping, it's one heck of a lousy burner). One little scratch and bam, down to 2x. I'll look into a 108 (if I can FIND one, that is)...

Ahem...now back to our regularly scheduled topic :)

Uh, I don't see what the problem is. PIE/PIF levels are WELL within spec on all of the 18x burns, aside from some singluar PIF spikes which probably will not affect playback performance. Looks good to me. For more results, check here:

But when u look at the end of every 18x-burned-media, u see PIF-clusters, not nice. And LG with Renesas are a bit faster with 16x.

My point is, I don´t thrust a Liteon-drive, these drives show less PI/PIF than all other scanners. And Cdfreaks only test high-quality-SL-media, Plextor do mostly well with it, but have problem with many other media

I totally agree with you Scour. I'm sure that that LiteON produced much rosier results than a more realistic scanner would. There really is no reason to buy this drive when a LG will burn even faster at 16X with better quality. I suspect even a BenQ with WOPC off could challenge this Plextor.

Easy to get it depends if you want to use real disc's and not free samples then it might be hard to get 8x DVD+RDL if you don't want to deal with online stores.
I can accept that they used the disc if they didn't overpresented it again. (why on specific space why not just put the data in the forum ??? )
I know this way you generate more hype.

Did you look at the other links I posted? The tweaked Autostrategy helps out quite a bit even with lower quality media. ProdiscR04@16x on the 760 is pretty good so it's not like the Plextor can only burn Japanese media well.

IMHO Prodisc R04 is not a lower quality media. There are a few writers that write good quaity on those media.

Infosmart and TY/MCC-Fakes are low-quality

Call me heartless, but I couldn't care less if a burner does poorly on such media as Infosmart...
