Dolphin Longevity Test 2.0

As promised, this is my latest run of longevity tests. All discs were burned on my BenQ DW1620 in mid to late september of 2004. All original scan were done with the LiteON LTN-832S, running firmware VS0A, using K-Probe 2.4.2. All followup scans were *ALSO* run using the same LTN-832S running firmware VS0A, and K-Probe 2.4.2. Thank you to MediumRare for assisting me in getting both the firmware *AND* the version of K-Probe needed.

First picture is the original scan done when making my BenQ DW1620 review, and the second picture is the followup scan made in the last few days.

Thank you for all this work.

The TY T02 seems to be showing some edge degradation aleady, kind of worrying for what is perceived as a top quality media. Are your other T02s exhibiting this degradation too?

btw, from personal experience Daxon media quality is very variable and your samples seem to wear well but I have quite a few which has degraded rather drastically.

Just quickly flew ovwer it (have to go to work) and my impression is that most results haven't changed much. And I can see why Ritek's have a bad reputation for longtime storage. :o

So far most of my Taiyo Yuden media, (4x, 8x and 16x DVD-Rs, and 8x DVD+Rs), have shown considerable degridation in almost every case. Unfortunately, I only have about 5 or 6 discs that can truly be considered test samples (and only the 1 of 8x DVD+R).

As you say, I've also found Daxon media to age quite inconsistantly. Some don't age at all, but others are quite the opposite.

Because of the amount of surprising data turned up in these 2 longevity tests I've done lately, I've been thinking about doing a serious study of DVDR media and the affects of real time ageing. Instead of using 1 disc of each type, I want to use 5 discs each, and maybe 20 different types of media. The media would be tested in the BenQ DW1640 and a LiteON drive, and re-tested every 6 months.

Unfortunately, it would be ~2 years before this study would really be of any use... and by then the Next Gen formats might be more established.

Any comments on my idea? Should I go through with it?

The info should be still be useful cos I think DVD media will be in relative popular use for quite a few more years since we are still waiting for the blue laser format dust to settle. Besides, DVD media prices have now achieved the best bang per buck ($/MB) when compared to almost all other optical media.

ATM, I can only foresee most getting the new gen blue laser burners only when they (burner, media, movie titles) become more widespread with cheap standalone players just like with DVD presently. Hey, I am still contented with my dirt cheap US$40 Cyberhome DVD/divx player despite using it on my 32" LCD HDTV - unbelievable value for the dollar. A HD player now would be nice but then again, I think I may still be able to count the total no. of movie HD titles on my fingers and toes... anyway, I had quite enough of being at the bleeding edge, I paid over US$1K for the reference Sony S7000 back then. lol
