If you need DVD-RAM and bitsetting, I am hearing that the Samsung SH-203B is an outstanding drive... Ordered one and waiting for it to arrive.

Where did you order from? I haven't seen anyone carrying this drive so far.

NewEgg.com... they list it as the SATA SH-202B... it is indeed the 203B. Several have ordered it and commented at CDFreaks forums. The SH-202 is the IDE version SH-203B is the SATA version... they just have a typo. I can confirm it for you later this week.

That would be most helpful. I'd like to try them; if they don't work, I can at least throw my SATA burning problem back in Intel's face as I return the drives, and if they do work, I'll be a happy man.

I'll let you know... I expect the drive to arrive tomorrow...

Also, there is a new firmware available for both the Pioneer DVR-212/212D (1.22) and the Samsung SH-S203B (SB01).

Got the drive... have not installed it yet, but according to the label it is a Samsung SH-S203B and not a 202B like NewEgg indicates.

Also, for anyone that cares, DVD-R burning is improved wit Pioneer DVR-212D firmware 1.22. I'm pretty happy with that drive for everyday use.

There are also a few other differences. I believe the 202 writes to DVD+R DL media at only 12x and it supports LightScribe.

Those having AHCI problems may want to try Intel's latest Matrix Storage Manager drivers v7.6.0.1011 dated August 2, 2007.

How about the PIONEER DVR-212D SATA BLACK BULK ?

Does it support reading of 96bytes unlike the ASUS DVD-ROM-E616P?

Also, is it true that it does not work with Verbatim 8X DVD+R DL media?

AFAIK the 96-Byte-Subs are only needed for a Playstation1-Game with the protection "Libcrypt"
