Postby Ian on Wed Oct 06, 2010 2:39 pm

Today, CDRLabs brings you an in depth review of Lite-On's new 12x Blu-ray Disc writer, the iHBS112. While affordably priced, this highly anticipated drive offers some of the fastest BD reading and writing speeds available. The iHBS112 is capable of 12x BD-R, 8x BD-R DL, 6x BD-R LTH and 2x BD-RE writing speeds and a maximum BD-ROM read speed of 8x. The drive also includes features like an 8MB buffer and support for Lite-On's SMART-BURN, SmartWrite and OverSpeed technologies.

Excellent review! Deciding right now whether to pick up another one for the other PC with the Newegg 10% discount that broke today.

Apparently the 10% optical drive discount won't work with the drive when I put it in my cart. Almost got me to pull the trigger!

So that deal is only for CD and DVD burners? Lame...

Yeah, just tried again thinking perhaps it wasn't activated earlier this morning, but still no go. Last I checked Bluray was an optical burner. I picked up another of those 2 TB 3-platter Ecogreen Samsungs with the $20 discount code though.

NewEgg just threw the iHBS112 onsale for $109.99 with free shipping as part of their "Black November" deals today. Have you heard of anyone cross flashing the iHBS112 to a iHBS212 for lightscribe?

It would depend on whether or not the Lighscribe sensor is on the iHBS112.

Thinking about picking up the retail iHB212 for the other PC now that the price is dropping again. Do you know if firmware 5L06 for the IHBS212 is equivalent to CL0F for the iHBS112?

Not sure. I have some data in regards to that but its for CL0D and earlier.

I can tell you though that 5L01 was released about the same time as CL04. If you move ahead 5 revisions for both, it would be 5L06 and CL0F

Newegg just threw the iHBS212 on sale today for $124.99 with free shipping and free 10 pack Verbatim 4X SL BD-R's. Unfortunately the Verbatims are LTH organic discs which don't work in my Oppo standalone.

I know it says LTH in the description, but the part number listed (96769) is for normal BD-R media.

I'm curious to see how much the rebadged Plextor version is going to go for.

I ended up grabbing the 212 before they went up in price yesterday. I'll let you know what BD-R's actually ship, but I'm pretty sure it isn't LTH.

This Lite-On iHBS112 writer does not support "binding nonce generation" right? Therefore cannot bypass Cinavia? You can check this link for more info -> http://club.myce.com/f116/dvdfab-list-b ... ost2668010

I think that thread already answers your question.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking to purchase a blu-ray writer but mostly, only Lite-on brands are available here in our country so I'm just wishful thinking that the information might be wrong so I can finally be able to get my burner. :D

I haven't tried it with the PL06 firmware but it doesn't appear to be supported in PL05.
