Lite-On 48125W Freeze at %4 during copying

Postby TCAS on Thu Nov 21, 2002 11:42 pm

This writer (Lite-On 48125W with Firmware VS08) have been working very smoothly and flawlessly until few days ago which since then When ever I am trying to burn a CD using either Express Nero or Nero Burning Rom, the process of copying freezed at %4 and copy process can't be discotinued unless rebooting the windows. The O/S I am using is WinXP Pro. If any one has experienced this type problem and has solution for it, appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thanks

BTW I have been using CMC or TY CD disk for the burning

You are seeing the same problem with different media, so that can't be the issue. Are you seeing the same problem with different compilations, or is this just one compilation you have been trying to burn and can't?

Hi Cfitz,

Thank you for being so active, helpa and resouceful in this forum, Yes I am facing the same problem with various Compilations and copying process. When writer stop freezing at %4 I can't even end the process through the Task Manage and most of the time I have to reboot the sytem to discontinue the freezed writer from the process.

there are a few tricks with win xp, first off, always make sure your hard drives are always defragged, i found a few times, where the buffer would just fall, another one is to use 40/80 pin UDMA ide cables

make sure windows is updated with service pack 1, and aspi layer is 4.6, there are newer aspi layers, but i found that 4.6 runs the best

Have you made any configuration changes lately or added any new hardware?

No I have not made hardware changes since days of tune working of the writer, the only activities I have had was using drivemapper from Norton Magic 8 to clean up the hard drive. BTW when I use Nero CD Speed the process is being performed as suppose to be, also Nero Info Tool is working properly but copying process has been distrupted.

Do you have InCD installed? If so, what version?

Does it lock up when doing a simulation, or only when doing an actual burn?

Have you tried disabling SMART-BURN just to see if it makes any difference? I don't think it will, but it is easy to try. Along those lines, it also might be worth trying to burn at different speeds, and see if that makes any difference. For example, if you have been burning at 48x, try burning at 24x or even 16x and see if the failure goes away or occurs at a different percentage.

Have you tried burning with a program other than Nero?

Post the record of a failed burn from the C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log. The events and error messages in the Nero log will usually point to the source of a problem.

The error messge coming up is "Aborted by user". :o

I know that you have not stopped the burn, but the program is interpreting the stoppage as being caused by an outside agent.

If I had to speculate, I might hypothesize that the hard drive cleanup that you did may have accidentally removed some necessary file(s) or changed the path of some files so that they can't be found. I would try uninstalling and reinstalling Nero to see if that fixes the problem.

Inertia;

Yes I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the Nero clean and completely but outcome is still the same, that is the copying process stop at %4 and disabling or discontinuing the copying process would be hard to do unless with task manager back and forth or restarting the window XP.

Nox;

No I have not tried disabling the DMA, which next I will do it just for the sake of another solution, but I have never had a problem with DMA being enable.

Inertia;

I did exactly what you recommanded to do;

1) I started Nero Simulation process with Fuji(TY) disk everything went very smooth that I got surpersied.

2) Then I selected CMC disk with Simulation process, this time Nero froozen at %4.

3) Again I choose another CMC disk where I got the same result froozen
at %4.

4) Then I thought may be the writer is sensetive to perticular media, I went back and start Simulation process with Fuji (TY) again as I did on step no. one, this time the writer started with recorder buffer level of %98 after a while dropped to %22 then %16, back to %98 then to %16 and finally dropped completely from wrting (Simulatio) process.

In the Steps 2 and 3 I couldn't even disengaged the writer from froozen process and I had to restart the computer to do that.

The result and the history of these 4 steps are as follow:

What is the source disc that you are trying to copy? Is this a copy protected disc? If so, Nero won't copy it successfully.

If this is not a copy protected disc, buy a different high quality media and try it.

Inertia;

The problem have surfaced both with disk to disk copying and with compilation process (copying from harddrive). I have used this drive for 3 months using Nero bundle that came with the unit with and never had any problem copying protected or nonprotected disk to be copied or with any compilation copying. This whole phenomeon just happen since a week ago.

BTW: thank you for showing interest to come up with solution for this problem.

Hey Guys;

I had done few things for this weekend that I like you to know, may be some others benefit this experience.

1) First I started with the drive itself, return my Lite-On 48X12X48 and exchange it with Lite-on 52X24X52, to my surperised this didn't help resolving the problem ( uninstalled nero also and reinstalled it).

2) I reformated my whole Hard Drive and installed Windows XP as clean install, no help either.

3) Changed the cables for the hard drive and cd-rw with no pervailed.

4) I have not installed any additional software program yet after reformating.

Still the program freezes some times and keep running until I stop the program fram task manager. Needless to say my hard drive which is 30GB Maxtor ATA 133 show low perfomance and slow operation on Sandra.

i will keep struggle to understand the problem and get the solution for it and keep you all posted. Thank all for offering helping hand on this problem.

If you are having the same problem with the new drive, reformat, etc. and your hard drive is also underperforming, you may have a busmastering driver problem.

Depending on what kind of chipset your motherboard has, install the latest chipset drivers and see if this cures the problems. For instance, if it is a VIA chipset, install the latest VIA 4in1 drivers.

Inertia;

Yes I do have Soyo M/B with KT333 VIA chipset, downloaded 4in1 VIA drivers V4.43 and installed it then I disable on board sound card and use the Sound Blaster 5.1 instead. Checked my Maxtor Hard Drive 30 GB ATA133 with Sandra File System Benchmark, the Drive Index Shows 23,435 which is used to be 34,000. This drive index is less than Same capacity drive (30GB) with ATA100. The perfomance of CD-RW is now better. I will continue to search for definite solution for the underperforming of my hard drive and keep everyone posted.

theres actually a pci latency patch, that also fixes some hd speed issues, it was only a problem if you used any via chipset, which in your case it is.

download it from here:

Huxlund;

Thank you for your response and the suggestion you made, this patch is only applicable if you have ATI Radeon Video Card or Aureal Vortex 2 Sound card. In my case the hard drive is underperforming even though is ATA 133 in KT333 VIA chipset motherboard and that is may contribute to irregularity of CD-RW operation.

Thanks again.

no it doesn't depend on your sound, or video card, it was actually referred to me cause, i was going to use my audigy firewire port to transfer mp3's with, you can't use it without it

I am having the exact same problem. I have a Lite-On drive installed, and it worked fine under Win98. I buy a new hard drive, install Windows XP and Nero, and now the CDR drive won't work. Locks up at %3-4. I put old hard drive with Win98 back in, and the CDR drive works great. Obviously it is XP related, but I can't figure it out either.

I haven't done anything with ASPI yet, so whatever the default is would be whatever it is currently. I do have SP1 installed. I'll have to look into ASPI to see what needs to be done. Any suggestions?
