Drive:
Asus CRW-4012A, firmware 1.0

Media:
Verbatim DataLifePlus/Mitsubishi Chemicals (made in India), rated at 40x.
Code: Select all
ATIP:              97m 34s 23f
Disc Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp.
Reflective layer:  Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
Media type:        CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds:  min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity:  702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)

Results:
burned at 32x with no errors (CDSpeed ScanDisk - 100% green).
Nero would'nt let me select any faster speed, no matter if FlextraLink was enabled or disabled. so could not test burning this media at 40x.

OK, here are some results for ARTEC 52/24/52. If you need any further clarification (ATIPs etc) please let me know ;)

Code: Select all
CHOICE      : 48x : RITEK J : 52x, no errors.
WHITE LABEL : 40x : PRODISC : 52x, FAIL; 40x as rated, no errors.
EBUYER.COM  : 48x : NAN-YA  : 52x, no errors.
MULTI-PLAY  : 32x : MMM&M   : 32x, no errors.
EPROFORMANCE: 40x : PRODISC : 52x, no errors.
ACER        : 16x : ACER    : 32x, no errors.
DATASAFE    : 24x : PRINCO  : 32x, 24x, errors on disc; 16x, no errors.
UNBRANDED   : 12x : RITEK G : 52x, no errors!
PRECISION   : 24x : RITEK J : 52x, errors on disc; 48x, no errors.
DISCRITE    : 16x : SKC-cyan: 32x, 16x, errors on disc; 8x, no errors.
SONY        : 32x : T-Y     : 52x, 32x, errors on disc; 16x, no errors.
GLACIER     : 48x : MBI     : 52x, no errors.

Generally this drive performs well at speed with phthalocyanine media, even difficult discs like the Multi-Play Tech discs above. However with cyanine-based discs it has a lot of problems -- looking at the burn it is pitted and cloudy (for want of a better term) suggesting that it is not providing enough laser power possibly.

Well, I finally got around to updating the firmware on my Memorex 48MAXX. I turned it into a LiteOn LTR-48246S with firmware SS0B, and now it does a fine job on my old batch of Imation/CMC 32x media:

Code: Select all
Lite-On LTR-48246S Firmware: SS0B

........................Imation/CMC 80min 32X..................48X

SMART-BURN ATIP info:
Code: Select all
Disc Type, Material = CD-R, Phthalocyanine
           ATIP Lead-in = 97m 26s 66f
      Norminal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f)
Disc Manufacturer maybe = CMC,Imation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 48X

All green in CD Speed Scan disc at 48x. And though CD Doctor results aren't official, I thought it would be informative to show the improvement with the new firmware.

Before (with Memorex SWS3 firmware):
Image

After (with LiteOn SS0B firmware):
Image

I guess I shouldn't be so conservative about upgrading my firmware. And I guess I will also have to stop bad-mouthing CMC...  In my defense, though, the SWS3 firmware did a fine job on the discs I normally used. And the CMC still isn't as good as the Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim DataLife Plus.

Thank you one and all! Sorry for not updating the list sooner, I was on spring break and I wasn't online for a week! I'm proud that I made it that long with no Internet. :) Anyway, comments below, please reply to your individual questions.

Burn2death: Were the Aopen/Ritek discs successful (0% errors) at any speed below 32X?

After seeing your results with the TY's and the Mexico Verbatim 48x, I was actually thinking of asking you for your firmware! Has the quality of the Verbatim-burns changed at all with the new firmware? (Things don't necessarily have to improve :o ).

Incidentally- happy St. Patrick's (or Fitzpatrick ? ) day.

700 MiB Verbatim UltraSpeeds

Postby MediumRare on Mon Mar 17, 2003 6:50 pm

Everybody was hoping for 700 MiByte UltraSpeed RWs from Verbatim: they're here now (at least in Europe). I bought one today (2.29 Euro)- they've been available for a couple of weeks, but I hadn't looked closely enough.
Code: Select all
LiteOn LTR 48246S
Firmware SS0B...........Verbatim DLP CD-RW/MC 80min 16-24X......24X
(corrected length on 19 Mar)
ScanDisk all green except for the notorious red in the last square.

Here the ATIPS mostly from CDRIdentifier:
Code: Select all
ATIP:              97m 34s 24f
Disc Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp.
Reflective layer:  Phase change
Media type:        CD-ReWritable
Recording Speeds:  min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity:  702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)
  SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 24X

The transfer rate for my LiteOn LTR 48246S shows (no surprise) CAV: total time 5:03, average speed: 18.17. It's still not much better than 16x CLV. I haven't had time to more than an initial test burn and can't say how the media reacts to erase/write cycles. Here is a scan from CD-Doctor at max read speed (40x for RW):

Image

With C1 ave/max = 2.7, 14, they are even better than the 650 MiB disks I've tried!

[edit]
There is a significant "first time" effect. After erasing/rewriting, these disks perform essentially the same as the 74 min /650MiB disks. I posted some scans in another thread together with a no-change result for firmware SS0C

Taiyo Yuden quality is the same as ever - impeccable. The Verbatim quality is still great too. However, I have noticed that some Verbatim discs aren't quite as great as the one I showed in the other thread. They are still quite good, but while some average 0.1 C1 just like my example in the other thread, others average 0.7 C1. This isn't a firmware issue, because I went back and found some discs burned with the SWS3 firmware that showed 0.7 C1 error levels as well. I guess this is more evidence of variable quality for Verbatim CD-R. However, it isn't enough of a variation to concern me.

Princo 32x -48x??

Postby Manatu on Sun Mar 30, 2003 2:39 pm

Hi,
I have a LG GCE-8520b v1.04
It allowed me to burn Princo 32x at 48x but when i burn audio disc the sound was weird.. i tested it for C1/C2 erros and they had a lot of them!!
I don´t recommend anyone burning these disc at more than 32x.
My question is:
What is the point of checking what the max speed the writers burn if it will result is less quality?

Sentinel 48x also burn at 52x

Yes, but ScanDisc was not 100%, therefore I'm assuming @ 32X it will be an error-free burn. Remember, according to the rules, ScanDisc must show a completely error-free burn (that means 100% green). The only exception is the last red block being unreadable bug when burning using Track-At-Once.

There is a difference between maximum speed and maximum successful burn speed. The maximum speed of your drive is 52X, that is how fast it can burn a CD at. The maximum successful speed (which means no errors on the CD) varies from disc to disc. Clearly, with the Princo discs, they could not burn successful at the maximum speed of your drive, therefore lower the burning speed until no errors appear on the disc.

The point of this thread is not to find the maximum speed of the burner, but rather the maximum successful burn speed for a certain burner tested with various kinds of blank media. Unless you want to record every disc at a very slow speed (e.g. 8X), which I recommend doing for audio discs anyway, then this Media Compatibility List will come in handy to find out the fastest speed you can burn a certain disc at with zero errors.

Also, remember that when I refer to errors I am referring to errors found in Nero ScanDisc, not CD Doctor/WSES.
