They had some problems with Ritek media... but have since switched to CMC for their consumer grade media. The CMC stuff has been quite good so far, and I'm personally keeping an eye on them

However, for comparisons to Taiyo Yuden or Sony Japan, you should be looking at Maxell "Plus Series" DVD-Rs, which are made in Japan by Maxell themselves. Expect these to go on sale at near Taiyo Yuden pricing at NCIX pretty soon.
In other news... I feel sorry for Maxell having to put up with my demands all the time
