Sony DW U18A (Now Sony DRU 700A)

Been having issues with the drive and was curious if anyone knew, perhaps, why?

1 good out of 6 so far, the first failed, but that's because I hadn't fixed Win2k *yet* (Fresh install tends to put ROM drives into PIO mode, I switched it to DMA mode to fix that) the second succeeded, and 3rd to 6th have failed. Usually read errors of certain sectors , though the second to last was a "Sesson Fixation Error " / "Invalid writestate" error.

Upgraded the ROM so it's a Sony DRU 700A, dismantled the drive to clean it out inside. Now it's in the middle of a verify and the verify is going so slow that Nero doesn't even display the "X" #. Just says "Verifying the compliation at 1,344 KB/s" , which drops down to about 500 KB/s and up to over 2,000 KB/s where when it reachs 1x speed it'll again start displaying the "X" number.

<lets this idle and waits for the verify to finish>

Another thing, the brand new discs come out with scratchs and grooves on the outer rim, I made sure the computer, which is on the floor, was solid and it is, it doesn't wiggle an inch. But they go in perfect, no scratchs or grooves at all, like brand new discs should. I could try to get the scanner up and running if anyone wants pics of the scratched dye side.

<looks at the just burned and failed disc> Yeap, scratched on the outer edge. Takes a flashlight at an angle and it shows up clear as day. Anyway, the log file.

My system setup:

AMD Athlon 1900+
Asus A7V 333 X
512mb (one stick) DDR 2100 memory
Windows 2k SP4 (With 48bit LBA enabled as my HDD is 160gb)
Seagate ST3160021A 160gb ATA / 133 HDD
Western Digital WD400AB-32BVA0 40gb HDD
Sony DRU 700A (formerly DW-U18A) DVD RW burner
Sony DDU 1612 DVD ROM

The two HDD are on the primary chain, the Seagate is drive 0, the WD is drive 1, the burner and ROM are on the secondary chain, the burner is drive 0, the ROM is drive 1. The HDD are both in DMA mode, mode 5 (133mb) and not too sure about the burner and ROM, I do know they are in DMA mode.

If you need any other specifications I'll happily provide them. Though I have a feeling it's the drive that's toast. Though the question remains, what during write / verify is scratching the discs? It can't have scratched *before* the write, else I *think* it would give write errors, right? Thanks!
