Fuji and TDK buy from several manufactures, including TY. Like Jim said, look for made in Japan if you want TY.

If it's a big name like Fuji or TDK or Maxell, then yes It's probably good to buy if it says Made in Japan. But it's not really a blanket statement that all things Japanese are going to be Taiyo Yuden

Still trying to sort out TDK's suppliers and place of origin. I found these codes listed at VideoHelp and would like to complete or correct the list if anyone can help out.

All but two of those are pretty obvious I think. Mitsubishi is Singapore, Ritek with Ricoh technology is for the Ricoh code discs. CMC is CMC. Taiyo Yuden is TY from Japan.

As for the 2 less obvious ones (one from Taiwan and one from France), they're both made by the same company. Who do you know with a manufacturing plant in both countries? (sorry, I can't help more then this).
