OK, here's the deal. I just got off the phone with Howard Wing @ Plextor. The drive will be shipping the last week or August. Not before.

The media. This will make many of you happy. Their new drive will be able to write to select 4x DVD+R media at 8x. I don't have all the details on the technology they're using to do this, but according to Howard, Plextor will have information on this within a week or so. They still needed to finalize the list of media that will be able to do this.

Good deal, now only if +R was more compatible than -R.

Ian I doubt it's a technology. Can't it be something as simple as burning 40-48X on 24-32X media. Some media is of high enough quality that it supports higher burn speeds.

Oops typo

Yeah, its something like that. I don't have 100% of the info and I didn't want to explain it wrong. Just wait for Plextor to release the details on it.

I guess it could be some new kind of write algorithm or the like, but media, as well al know, is one of the biggest limiters of writespeed so that's what imma thunkin'. Hardware just keeps moving forward.

FYI ETA is now 9/8. Generally takes a week or two to get into the channel once it's hit the distributors. Looks like Plex gave Ian da scoop.

BTW Ian, if you chat with him again, I think many of us would be interested to hear how its CD burning capabilities are (EFM, bypassing protections for backups etc...)

Too bad the info isn't available yet.
OD has their 2 for 1 (again) on Verbatim DVD+R this week.
I have quite a few Memorex 4X (Made by Ricoh) left over, but wouldn't mind getting some Verbatim on sale if they will burn at 8X...

What I'm going to do is just buy small quantities of different media and see what will burn at 8x.

I bought some Verbatim 4X tonight (black spindle bottom as opposed to gray bottom which I think are older).
If they can't burn at 8X (i.e. aren't on Plextor's list of 8X capable 4X media) then I will return them sealed.

I hope the list will be out soon.
I wouldn't mind getting more (there is a 2 spindle per day limit per customer) Verbatim 4X (on sale) if they can be burned at 8X.

Office Depot has their B1G1F (Buy one get one free) again on 15 packs of Verbatim DVD-R and DVD+R.
In-store only. It is in the weekly flyer and the CSR just needs to enter the coupon code listed on the flyer.
I paid just under $34 + tax for 30 DVD discs.

Yes, it is this week only.
Note that there is a limit of one offer per customer per day.

They seem to do it every two months or so.

Help

Postby DReborn on Wed Aug 27, 2003 3:38 pm

Hey everybody, quick question. I am riding the fence between the plextor and the sony 510. They both are roughly the same price so is it really worth it to wait for Ian to tell us whether or not we should get it? Just wondering the big differences between them Basically, I am just tired of waiting the techno roller coaster...when will they just let us be happy with what we have for 3 months? =)

I'd get the Plextor, no one knows how well it will do, but you will have the latest and hopefully greatest hardware. I'd get the PX-708A if I were you.

If the price is the same, go for the Plex.

I was going to do the same, but now I'm going to wait a little for the prices of the Dual drives to drop. The NEC is currently the cheapest at e160 and the Plex will be introduced next week at e250. On the other hand, the new Lite-On (+only) is now available at e120. That's a very big difference in my book.

In addition the photo of the drive itself seems more detailed now...
