News of CD-R/CD-RW Drives

First post.

I need to buy a CDRW, external and USB. Older PC, small footprint, no internal room. Ports must be USB not USB2.

So far my research turns up:

HP CD-Writer 8230E and

Iomega Zipcd (31475) I believe is the product number.

Do you all have any suggestions?

Also, while I'm at it what would be a good media brand for both CD-RW and CD-R?

When I was looking at this drive at Best Buy, I was going to purchase it, because it was supposedly a rebadged LiteON. However, I was under the impression that Lite-On drives used "Smart Burn" technology, this memorex 52x uses something called "Just Burn" technology. I can't seem the make heads or tails of the burn-proof strategys. Whats the difference? And is the 52x memorex drive really a lite-on?

I've got a Liteon 40125W CDRW Drive and I was burning a cd and it finished burning and Nero locked up and the light was permanently on the CDRW drive (It was orange, not red as when writing, and not green as in reading) and I couldn't open the drive, I left it 5 mins and it was still the same. I have several older CD-RW discs (Memorex 2X media) that I formatted, created and wrote to with my Dell Latitude C610 Notebook, which has the Samsung SN-308B CDRW-DVD (24x/8x/8x) combo drive. Those disks continue to be formatted, read and written to fine in that laptop and drive - using both DirectCD AND the built-in Windows CD writing tools.

I burned a dozen successful CD-R's a few weeks ago with my new Lite-On 48x CD-RW.

I played with CD Speed tonight, and did a "Scandisk surface test" on a few of those CD-R's. To my surprise Scandisk found several damaged and unreadable sectors on many of the CD-R's. If I had never done this test I would never had known, as I seem to be able to read the files okay on the CD-R's. ...

I installed a Lite-On 48x12x48x CD-RW into my Compaq Presario 5000 series PC which was purchased 2 years ago.
