DVD-Burner test and diagnostics in c't magazine

The German computer magazine c't has a DVD-Burner test in the newest issue (at newstands in Germany on Monday). I won't go into all the details, but there are a number of interesting observations.

How can you tell what make the CD's and DVD's are?

I know that certain media are marketed under various names. But in order to know if my drive is comaptible with them I'd like to know who the manufacturer is. How can I find out?

2MB or 8MB Data Buffer

How important is higher data buffer? Does it make a difference? The Sony has 8MB, how much does the PX708A have? And, how good do you all think this new Lite-On LDW-411S will be? Thanks.

[PX-708A] No 10x CD-RW re-write *Update: Plextor is dying*

My PX-708 (FW 1.00) doesn't want to write or erase my 10x CD-RWs.
I tested with used and brand-new Verbatim and Intenso 10x with Nero .11, Blindwrite and Alcohol120. None could erase the used disk or even write on the new ones.
The plextor starts, but after 3 seconds I hear a *klack* sound from the drive and the LED changes from yellow to green. Then the tray opens. Nothing erased or written.
A friend ...

Optorite DD0201/DD0203

Optorite's site now shows it's DD0201

Everything is basically the same, except the face, and DD0201 has CD Audio Play function button on it.

Firmware page is also updated with

"DD0201(DVD±RW) DV2_2_17_E.zip (What is my model number? )
2003.8.27 "

It is the same firmware mistakenly posted for DD0203 before
