Problem Burning CDRs

I’m having a problem burning CDRs with my NEC 1300A (IDE), which is five years old. I also have another computer with an Optiarc 7200, but I would like to figure out why I’m having a problem doing CDRs on the older computer, which I still use.

For the first five years, I had no problems, but now, most of the times when I insert a blank CDR into the NEC, I get nothing at ...

printable media (cd's and DVD's) and the printers

I was wondering what people had to say about printable media (cd's and DVD's) and the printers that print on them. Mainly, I am interested in a general all-purpose color inkjet that can do the job and not a fancy dedicated (ie: expensive) printer. does Lightscribe in any way effect the longevity of media?

I am planning to us Taiyo Yuden DVD+R's in the future to backup important files. If I label them using the Lightscribe technology or other thermal lacquer technology, will that in any way decrease the longevity/reliability of the disc? Thanks for the advice!
