Media Compatibility With CD-RW Drives - Which Media Is Best?

General discussion about recordable CD, DVD and BD media and write quality testing.

Postby TheWizard on Wed Jan 22, 2003 11:47 pm

Mmm...steak!

Thanks MediumRare. Most people have submitted results for the LTR-48125W and very few for the LTR-48246S...until now. :)

The Ricoh CD-RW's are probably DST. I trust the CD Doctor manufacturer listing more than I do the Smart-Burn one. It looks like, from the results, that upgrading the firmware helped much of the successful burns. Have you tried writing on all the listed media with the new firmware? If so, what are those results?

Well my stake is more in the search for the best burner-fodder.

I think the firmware is mainly an issue for the rewritables and particularly the Verbatim Ultraspeeds. The BestMedia disk may have been "spoiled" by my old 4x drive. I did not fully erase it with SID1 and the 8x limit was also present with SS06 until the full erase. The Intenso 24x and MMore 48x are no different with SS06 and I'm out of the other types.

The major restriction in SID1 was the 16x for the Ultraspeeds. I did some systematic studies re. speed with firmware and the Ultraspeeds but am not sure if this is the place to post that.

The Ricoh CD-RW's are probably DST.

The discs could be anything. Although 9727xx is assigned to DST, many less-reputable manufacturers have been using it illegally, due to the fact that (1) it is very similar to the test ID 972700 which is commonly used even though it shouldn't be, and (2) DST are very lazy when it comes to persuing companies using its ATIP, unlike other companies like Ritek or TY who come down on such firms like a ton of bricks.

In fact I'm not even sure if DST make CDRWs!

The manufacture.txt file from CD Doctor lists DST as starting at 97,27,01 so I think the Doctor has a boundary problem in its lookup routine and Jase is probably right.

LG GCE-8481B
Firmware 1.02

Pine/PC 80min 48x --> 48x
Princo/?? 80min CD-RW 12x --> 12x

I'm really glad I found this website otherwise I wouldn't have known to upgrade the firmware on this machine. Nero said that it came with firmware 1.1 but I couldn't get anything to burn at more than 10x. A firmware "upgrade" to 1.02 seemed to solve everything.

According to the OSJ Disc Identification Method document ( www.cdr-forum.de/download/cdr.pdf ), the last digit of the ATIP code is used to indicate the media type/recording strategy (e.g. cyanine/long strategy, phthalocyanine/shortstrategy), so CD Doctor probably just ignores the last digit when looking up the manufacturer.

The media is HP (TY's) 16x.
What's the deal ?

Thanks

Hey laszlotr, sorry your questions are getting overlooked. I don't normally recommend posting the same question in multiple threads (in fact I frown on it in general) but in this case I think you really may have posted in the wrong thread and because of that the question isn't getting the visibility it deserves. This thread is intended for reporting of media test results, not for debugging burning issues. Try adding more detail (exactly what drive, firmware versions, software, software revisions, software settings, IDE setup, etc.) and posting your question as its own thread in the CD-RW forum.

cfitz

Thanks for your recommendation and sorry for my off topic question.

LTR 48246S

Postby MediumRare on Sun Jan 26, 2003 1:31 pm

The only surprising thing here is the manufacturer:
Code: Select all
........................TDK Metallic/TDK 80min 48x..............48x
Quality is excellent, but not as good as the TDK 40x (C1 max/mean = 10/0.6). The 40x are no longer available in the store where I bought them 3 weeks ago!
cfitz wrote:... CD Doctor probably just ignores the last digit when looking up the manufacturer.

You're probably right- Nero shows the same info with "shift refresh". The OSJ document explicitly lists 97m27s00f as illegal though.

Wizard: I tested some LG 48x media on 52246S and 48125W, here are the results:

Code: Select all
LiteOn 52246S
FW 6S06 or 6S0A

LG/Prodisc 48x ................. 40x 3:01

LiteOn 52246S
FW 6S0C

LG/Prodisc 48x ................. 52x 2:25

6S0C did a great change with these discs :D

I didn't finish the tests with the 48125W, they have errors even @ 40x, but since I have installed this drive on a Pentium III @450 Mhz I have some probs gettin the necessary transfer rate.

I bought these media basicaly for profit (they are cheaper than the Verbatim), but now with the release of the 6S0C they are excelent for the 52x drive.

I hope that LiteOn releases new FW for the 48125W soon.

Here's a surprise:
LiteOn 48246S:
Firmware: SS0B..........Verbatim DataLife/CMC 80min 16X.........48X

CD Doctor C1 ave/max: 4.5/19.

I picked up a single disk about a year ago and was leary to try it out after the disaster with the Philips 16x. They have the same ATIP:

ATIP: 97m 26s 66f
Disc Manufacturer: CMC Magnetics Corp.
Reflective layer: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)

Or it could be CMC's spotty quality control. Or it could be that the discs share the same ATIP code but weren't made by the same manufacturer.

Cheap but can perform quite well for my liteon. But I don't think can trust it for long term storage. Even before start using, one of those label come off. Use it to burn something for my friends. Here is the result from CD Doctor:
http://www.geocities.com/lppnet/giga.htm

Drive : LTR-52246S
Firmware: 6S0C
Software : Nero Burning ROM 5.5.10.7

ATIP information of Gigastore 74min CDR (from Smart-Burn):
This Disc is designed for CD-RW/COMBO Drive Only.
Disc Type, Material = CD-R, Cyanine
ATIP Lead-in = 97m 28s 12f
Norminal Capacity = 660.21MB (75m 09s 00f)
Disc Manufacturer maybe = GigaStorage,MaxMax
