Looking to replace an Aopen 48x12x50

Postby aviationwiz on Mon Jun 23, 2003 12:11 am

I'm looking to replace my old Aopen 48x12x50 in one of my systems. I want to get the Premium, but I might not have the money for another one.

What do you guys think is good. I want the best speed and quality. Price, is not really an object, as besides, the Premium and the F1 are the only ones I can't afford.

What do you guys think of the quality of the Mitsumi 54x and the Lite-On 52x (LTR-52246S or LTR-52327S). All Three are fast enough for me.

Can you please hook me up with CD Doctor, K's Probe or Q-Check screens of disks burning on these drives at top speed? I really want to have the C1 Max, Average, and Total. That's why I can't use the WSES screens used on Ian's reviews.

If your going to say that one is good over the other because of the reputation, don't bother posting anything. I am going to be extra cautious when reading the replies, as I know that some people will tell me Lite-On rules without giving me any sort of proof.

The tests would have to be burned on the real burner (not overclocked garbage.)

NOTE: This has nothing to do with recent events carried out in these forums. Do not think that I have given up with Plextor, because I haven't. I simply want to know how these drives perform.

LOL  Well, I have to give you credit for being brave enough (or is it foolish enough?) to ask a question like this after all the snorting, ground-stomping, chest-thumping and head-butting that has been going on around here lately. I'm not sure what sort of answers you are expecting given recent history and your involvement in it, and I have nothing to contribute since I don't own any of the particular models you are looking for, but I am looking forward to watching the ensuing melee...

Perhaps this thread will be more civilized, but I don't hold out a lot of hope. 8)

I think that you should wait for Ian's review of the LTR-52327S ;)

I would wait for his review, but I want to get this thing replaced within a month at the very most. When will it be up Ian?

cfitz:

I think it is brave enough. I am not saying at all that either of these drives are better than the Premium. The Premium is, the best. Since people here know more about cheaper CD Burners than I, I am asking them.

The "brave or foolish" statement was only in reference to your apparent willingness to take the heat that might be directed towards you for asking a question like this at this time. It is a perfectly reasonable question, mind you, it just seems that asking it at a time like this may be looking for trouble. I do hope you get (and give) thoughtful and reasonable replies despite the recent events. 8)

I'm not looking for an argument here. Just looking for awnsers. Notice that I did not ask for what the best burner overall was. I asked how well each drive performed. No arguments should erupt, but if they should, I am ready to defend my country. (OK, I had to say that, it just fit in well.)

Hrm, I wouldn't recommend the Mitsumi, I wasn't impressed by its' overall performance, but you can make your own decisions on that

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Article ... W&Series=0

As for the LiteON drives... well, the LiteON 52327S is very likely a very good drive, and the LiteON 52246S is considered a a very good drive as well, so I would recommend either one.

On a personal note, I would recommend a LiteON over the Mitsumi for the quality testing options alone! also The Mitsumi doesn't return C2 error info, and therefore cannot test CD-R/Ws  also, it failed to re-write a 32x CD-RW (made by Mitsubishi)!!! :o

I didn't have high hopes for that Mitsumi. Well, That's Out. Lets see some good ol' spanking C1/C2 Tests on the Lite-On LTR-52246S and the LTR-52327S.

Wow, 48X12X50 drives are OLD now? Where have I been? My 32X10X40 must be ancient! :P

I don't like the drive, it is ultra loud, and isn't a very good reader.

is it just me or is 48x12x50x the wackiest combination of speeds you've ever seen?

I think that my Sony CRX160E (12/8/32) was weirder... The TDK CDRW5200B (52/24/48) is pretty odd as well :D

Anyone have Lite-On results from the LTR-52246S or the LTR-52327S?
It doesn't look to promising to get one, considering no one is posting about the quality.

If you can wait a week or two, you'll have your review.

If you are truly interested in seeing results for the 52246S then look around the forums here and at CDFreaks. Plenty of people have already posted results from this model.

That's definitely an odd combination. I have a 12x8x36x Philips, which is also an odd combination. :o

I can wait for the review. I'd rather wait, and see if this new drive is worth it then get the LTR-52246S now and regret it later.

What will you be using for testing the CD Quality? Please use KProbe, CD Doctor or Q-Check.

I'm interested in seeing how the LiteON 52327S fairs with 32x CD-RWs!

From what I've seen on other CD Writers, it won't be able to do 32x RW's very well.

What you talkin about Willis?

The only thing I've been stumped on is whether or not its using CAV or P-CAV when packet writing. With 400MB of data I'm seeing times of about 2:05 with Nero and about 2:43 with InCD. Unfortunately, Lite-On hasn't been much help in figuring this out.

Ian:

I presume 2:43 for InCD was for non-MRW.

Here are extracts for CD-RW writing from other reviews.

Code: Select all
______ LTR-48125W PX-W4824A PlexPrem LTR-52246S LTR-52327S
CD-RW      4:35     2:22      2:21      3:09      2:43
CD-MRW     4:52     3:04      3:00      3:31      3:08
Nero       4:28     2:28      2:30      3:38      2:05

Plextor Premium was tested on Verbatim 24x, whereas LTR-52246S on Mitsubishi 24x, with InCD 3.52 and 3.51 respectively. I don't recall what you used for LTR-52327S.

It's amusing to note that for CenDyne 48x Combo on Verbatim 24x with InCD 3.52, the timings (2:30, 3:00, 2:38 ) are quite close to those of Plextor Premium.

I guess aviationwiz will like this comparison! :P

Nope that wasn't for CD-MRW. Here's some info on the CD-MRW performance though.

Fully formatted disc: ~3:09
Not fully formatted: ~3:07

Or about 3:08 overall.

I used some Mitsubishi/Verbatim 32x media.
