Media Compatibility With CD-RW Drives - Which Media Is Best?

General discussion about recordable CD, DVD and BD media and write quality testing.

Postby TheWizard on Sat Jan 24, 2004 12:35 am

DeathStalker77: In the Media Compatibility List, there are results for the Fuji/Prodisc discs. They performed quite well in the Lite-On LTR-52246S and satisfactory in the BenQ CRW4824W.

As always, MediumRare, thank you.

thanks G.
though i have a feeling that i woun't be seeing any of these here.

i remember just once (maybe a year and a half ago) i saw 1 pack of DataLife that said Made in Japan. but hesitated about trying them out (a little expensive for CMC), a week later they were gone.

never saw anything like again.

You can check out my post here for the k-probe scans:
http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic. ... 8347#98347

I find it VERY interesting how the Plextor Premium reported all green the whole way through, but the LG-8525B, even when it had BETTER results then the Plextor (on those first burns on a virgin CD-RW disc), still read the disc as having some yellow blocks sometimes. Of course most of the time the LG burner did not out perform the Plextor Premium anyways

Many thanks, bhairavp and dolphinius. :) The Verbatim 32X CD-RW's are indeed strange. I wonder if the media, drive, or Nero CD Speed is to blame. Perhaps Ultra Speed CD-RW media is not stable yet, perhaps this is why companies have not released it until now. And now that it is available to the public, albeit in short quantity, this may be the 'experimental' first batch, as it were. Sort of like burners and firmware: things can always be improved. I'd be interested in seeing back-to-back scans of the same disc. Sometimes CD Speed will give slightly different results the second time through. So, while the first scan may reveal 95.98% green, the second scan of the same disc in the same drive may reveal 100% green.

The media:

Verbatim Datalife Plus 32x CD-RWs

SmartBurn info (as shown by Pioneer DVR-107):
Code: Select all
        Drive Type = DVD DUAL
         Disc Type = ULTRA SPEED CD-RW 32X
          Material = Phase Change
           Lead In = 97:34:25
          Lead Out = 74:43:00
  Nominal Capacity = 656.40MB
Manufacturer Maybe = Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 24X (Write)

Burn Speed: 24x

Scandisc results:
All green... but warned that the drive cannot report damaged blocks. However, the drive read the disc at full speed very well, and all the files checked out ok.

OK, thank you Centrilium, but how do you know they work great? :) Have you tested a burned disc with Nero CD Speed's ScanDisc? If so, what were the results? Also, which drive did you burn the disc in? At what speed? And what firmware are you using with the drive?

Here are the results:

Image
There are no errors even when I burn them at 48X except if you noticed the last block being unreadable.I guess it's not due to the media but my burner instead.I am using a TDK4800B but I managed to flash it to a LiteON LTR-52246S ver.6S0F(newest).The problem seems to happen to all my other cdrs (the ones from Prodisc,TY,CMC and MCMedias) as well.It seems that when I exceed the 650mb limit, the problem will most likely occur.Anyone knows any solution to this?[/img]

Exactly, CD Speed reports the last block of any disc burned as Track-At-Once as unreadable. It's been a glitch in the program for as long as I can remember.

Audiobahn CDRs from CircuitCity - followup

Postby DeathStalker77 on Fri Feb 06, 2004 2:36 pm

Ok, finally got around to running Nero Scandisc on several of them - all burned at 52x on my LiteOn 52327s (QOSB) - and all came out green! I was pleasantly surprised. These appear to be all CMC discs, but I've yet to have a problem with them - easily as good as the Maxell, Memorex, or TDK that I've been getting from BestBuy. C1 error rates are more numerous than I would like, but not out of line with the others - and of low value as well (<5).

Still can't beat the Fuji TYs though =( And I haven't received a reply to my e-mail to TY yet.

For me i am starting to think that the Nero Scandiasc isn't that accurate.I prefer to use LiteOnIT's Kprobe to scan for C1/C2 errors.
Here are the results for my Sony Supremas Colormix which are made by TY Company.
Image
Note that anything below 2000 C1 errors is exceptionally good.the moderate ones should have something around 5000 C1 errors. The worst are above 10k.

Scandisc isn't about accuracy. It's about whether or not the discs can be fully read in the drive it was burned in. To this particular end, it does a good job.

Plasmon (OHM) CDRs

Postby DeathStalker77 on Mon Feb 23, 2004 1:52 pm

Two words for these (from Circuit City) - STAY AWAY.

These discs are GARBAGE! They're the first Plasmon discs I've had, and if this is representative of their quality (or rather, lack thereof), I'll never buy them again. Out of around 15 discs burns, from 2 different 50pk spindles, I got 2 or 3 good ones (haven't run K-Probe on them yet, though) - one disc had almost 17% bad sectors! I'm taking them back to Circuit City tonight to see if they'll exchange them (at the rabate rate!) for some more Audiobahns (they've been good discs, a bit high on the C1 errors, but solid green as far as Nero goes).

I'm also going to contact the manufacturer of these OHM discs and advise them of my extreme dissatisfaction. I suppose it's not impossible for a "bad batch" to have gone out - had that happen with a spindle of Nashua (Samsung) discs a couple years ago, and the manufacturer made good on them.

Were both discs burned at 48X successfully? If so, then the new firmware means increased compatibility with the Fuji/Prodiscs. Before, with firmware c.fz, they were only able to burn at 40X successfully.

Today I went and bought a Philips CD-R80 disc. The dye is gold in colour.I am highly suspicious of this cdr...
Can you guys help me out.
Here is the ATIP:

Drive Type = CD-RW
Disc Type = CDR (A+)
Material = Phthalocyanine
Lead In = 97:26:66
Lead Out = 79:59:74
Nominal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f/LBA:359849)
Manufacturer Maybe = CMC Magnetics Corporation
Smart-Burn Speed Limit = Wrt(24X),Rd(12X)

As you can see its a rebadged very old stock rated at 40X but the ATIP scan shows very funny results..
First it says that it's CMC but as far as I know the code in the middle ring doesn't match any CMCs at all(CMCs have very big characters with ink marks). It's laser marked.Second, the dye is gold(advanced phythlocyanine)in colour and I've never seen CMC with gold dyes before. Also look at it's rating..A+.Could somebody tell me more about this cdr with the traits I just provided?Weird thing this very old stock cdrs are only rated 24X write speed by Smartburn. Is this a cheap imitation quality cdr?By the way I'm using a LiteON LTR-52327S cdr burner.

The ATIP is deffinatly from CMC... what are the two serial numbers? (the one in the plastic hub, and the one in the mirrorband?)

There's no serial on the mirrorband....
On the platic hub the serial is not ink based and it writes:"6104GJ282744LHD5"

Definitely CMC. Why not try burning one of the discs, scanning it with Nero CD Speed ScanDisc, and posting the results here? :)
