Panasonic May Form Blu-ray Partnership With Samsung
Posted by Ian on April 21st, 2008 at 10:06 AM CST
In a recent interview with The Korea Times, Peter Weber, manager of Panasonic Corporate Communication Europe, hinted that the company plans to expand the Blu-ray player market by forming a strategic parnership with Samsung. While there aren't a lot of details, Weber states that Panasonic would focus on marketing rather than the introduction of new Blu-ray players.
``Now, the discussion is over. We will maintain a healthy relationship with Samsung Electronics for the next-generation computer storage market,'' Peter Weber, manager of Panasonic Corporate Communication Europe, said in an interview with The Korea Times, Sunday, on the sidelines of the IFA 2008 International Press Conference here.

``Panasonic doesn't care about the introducing timing of Blu-ray players. Time is very crucial to step up the marketing for better prospect of such devices,'' he said, adding his company is all set to inject money only for promotion.
The Korea Times also mentions that next-generation Blu-ray players will come with built in hard drives to store downloadable content. If you'd like to read more, the entire article can be found here.

I never developed a second language myself so I truly admire those who do. But sometimes it's a bit hard to understand exactly what is being said by those whose first language is not English. And .. That's the case here.

Anybody care to interpret this lifted paragraph, this lead-in to my published comment?

I'm very much looking forward to purchasing a Panasonic DMP-BD50 Blu-Ray player. Would I be buying one of the last Blu-Ray players manufactured by Panasonic? Would Samsung be the manufacturer of this product in the future or would this product just go away in favor of Samsung designed players? What does, "inject money only for promotion" mean - no manufacturing?

I have an HD-DVD player (HD-A1). I've been burned once. Please bear with my paranoia.

I think its still too early to know what this partnership is all about. The DMP-BD50 is pretty far along in development so I think its a safe bet to say that its manufactured, or at least designed, by Panasonic.
