Buffalo Japan sent out a press release this morning, announcing two new 12x Blu-ray Disc writers. Based on what appears to be the LG BH12NS30, the internal BR3D-12FBS-BK and external, USB 3.0 equipped BR3D-12U3 are capable of 12x BD-R, 12x BD-R DL, 6x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds and a maximum BD-ROM read speed of 10x. The BR3D-12U3 is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0. However, as Buffalo is quick to point out, its BD-R writing speed is limited to 8x.

The BR3D-12FBS-BK and BR3D-12U3 come bundled with CyberLink's Blu-ray Disc Suite and are expected to cost 39,100 Yen ($433US) and 28,500 Yen ($316US), respectively, when they hits stores in mid-June.
Add a commentBuffalo Japan sent out a press release this morning, announcing the world's smallest portable DVD writer, the DVSM-PSS58U2-BK. This new drive weighs a mere 250g and utilizes a low-profile, aluminum frame that's about the same size as a standard CD case (131 x 14.5 x 130 mm). The DVSM-PSS58U2-BK is also USB powered and is capable of 8x DVD±R, 6x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW and 5x DVD-RAM writing speeds and a maximum DVD read speed of 8x.

The DVSM-PSS58U2-BK is scheduled to ship in the middle of June and is expected to cost about 10,600 Yen ($116US).
Add a commentPanasonic Corporation has achieved the cumulative sales quantity for its dual-wavelength high-power laser for DVD recorders to 300 million units in April, 2010. The production of dual-wavelength high-power laser started the first time in the industry in June 2006. Now, under the favorable demand of the personal computers, Panasonic will increase monthly production to 25 million units (300 million annually) for the latter half of this fiscal year.
The dual-wavelength high-power laser has been highly reputed for its quality and stable supply. The device offers several advantages in comparison to the use of single wavelength lasers as it combines two laser wavelengths, an infrared beam (with a wavelength of 780 nm, for CD use) and a red beam (with a wavelength of 650 nm, for DVD use), in a single chip. As result, light source point adjustment is unnecessary, the optical pickup system can be simplified, and the number of peripheral parts can be halved. These benefits helped dual-wavelength lasers capture a high share of the total market for DVD recorder pickups and achieve the sales of 300 million units in the four years since production started.
Despite the growing popularity of digital downloads and flash-based storage, the demand for optical disc drives is on the rise. According to DigiTimes Research, Taiwanese manufacturers are expected to ship 21.9 million optical disc drives in the second quarter of 2010.
Taiwan-based makers will ship 21.9 million optical disc drives (ODDs) in the second quarter of 2010, increasing by 9% on quarter and by 29% on year, according to forecast by Digitimes Research.
Of the ODDs to be shipped in the second quarter, 54.4% will be slim-type models because of growing demand for notebooks, and DVD-RW (rewritable) models will have the largest shipment share, Digitimes Research indicated.
Add a commentBuffalo Japan recently announced its new portable, slot loading DVD writer, the DVSM-PS58U2/S-BK. While measuring a mere 137×142×20mm, this USB bus powered drive is capable of 8x DVD±R, 6x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW and 5x DVD-RAM writing speeds and a maximum DVD read speed of 8x. The DVSM-PS58U2/S-BK also sports a piano black finish and comes bundled with CyberLink's DVD Suite.

The DVSM-PS58U2/S-BK is scheduled to ship in the middle of May and is expected to cost about 11,500 Yen ($122US).
Add a commentRenesas Electronics Corporation, a leading provider of semiconductor solutions, today announced the company's first blue-violet semiconductor laser diode with a wavelength of 405 nm and a new structure incorporating an optical waveguide into the semiconductor device, which enables high power output and excellent suitability for mass production.

The new blue-violet semiconductor laser diode, part number NV4A61MF, is ideal for Blu-ray disc recording and playback, and features a new inner-stripe structure in which the optical waveguide that substantially influences the quality of the laser diode is incorporated into the semiconductor. In this new structure, the optical waveguide is fabricated on a gallium nitride (GaN) substrate with approximately ten times improved accuracy and 20 percent increased heat dissipation compared to the conventional devices, in which the optical waveguide is formed on the surface of the laser chip. With this innovative structure, the new device provides the following features. (1) It offers high optical power output of 350 milliwatts (mW) suitable for 8x Blu-ray disc recording even at temperatures of up to 85°C; (2) The current and optical output characteristics provide excellent linearity from the low-output range through the high-temperature, high-output range. (3) It reduces laser noise (output fluctuation) that occurs during playback to less than one third of the company's existing devices, realizing 5 decibel per hertz (dB/Hz) improvement.
