The DVD6C Licensing Group (DVD6C) announced today that it has revised its patent licensing program. The new license agreement offers reduced royalty rates on DVD Decoder and DVD Encoder.
The DVD6C Licensing Group (DVD6C) consisting of nine leading developers of DVD technology and formats — Hitachi, Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic), Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Toshiba Corporation, Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Inc. — today announced that it has revised its worldwide patent licensing program beginning on and after July 1, 2008, including offering a new license agreement (the “New DVD6C License”), which offers the following reduced royalty rates on DVD Decoder and DVD Encoder, respectively.

The legal battle between Philips and Princo has been going on for as long as I can remember. While both companies have had their share of victories, the latest round has gone in favor of Philips. According to DigiTimes, a local court in Taiwan has ordered Princo to pay Philips $21.1 million for CD-R licensing.
A local court in Taiwan, on August 15, announced its judgment that Princo, a Taiwan-based maker of blank optical discs, must pay Royal Philips Electronics a total of 2.354 billion yen (US$21.1 million) for CD-R licensing. The fees are due for the period from the fourth quarter of 1997 to the fourth quarter of 1999 plus interest for delayed payment, according to Princo's filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) on August 18.
